Campbell Pulls Away in Singles to Down Lancers

Singles Wins from Pelak, Venta Not Enough in 5-2 Loss to Fighting Camels

FARMVILLE, Va. – Led by ace Alexandra Andrivot, Campbell took hold in singles play to clinch a 5-2 Big South victory over Longwood Friday afternoon at the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts.

Andrivot won both her No. 1 singles and doubles matches, accounting for two early wins that built the Fighting Camels (5-7, 2-2 Big South) a 3-0 cushion they rode to their third win in their past five matches.

"We need to use these matches to keep growing and learn to capitalize on our opportunities," said first-year Longwood head coach Maria Lopez. "The team fought hard in singles. We will use this and keep making adjustments for the matches to come."

After a 6-2 doubles win alongside partner Isabel Boada, Andrivot set the tone in singles play by sweeping Longwood freshman No. 1 Jamie Breunig 6-0, 6-3. The singles win was the fifth in the past six matches for Andrivot, a sophomore from Peymeinade, France, who improved to 8-4 when playing atop Campbell's lineup.

After Andrivot's early singles win, Alexandra Nicoara followed with a straight-sets victory over Lancer senior Mason Thomas at No. 4 before Anna Pelak put Longwood on the board with a straight-set singles win of her own at No. 5. The win cut the lead to 3-1 and was the second straight singles victory for Pelak, who was coming off a three-set win against Towson on March 7 in her last outing.

Lancer freshman Marija Venta followed the senior Pelak's lead with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Lea Cutura at No. 2 singles to cut the Campbell lead to 3-2, but that would be as close the Lancers (1-9, 0-5 Big South) would come to completing the comeback bid.

With the final two singles bouts both running three sets, it was Campbell's No. 3 player Pauline Roustan who clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-7 (4), 6-3 win over Lancer senior Paloma Alatorre.

The Lancers will have a short turnaround before getting another chance at their first home win this season when Saint Mary's comes to town Saturday. That match, originally slated for an 11 a.m. first serve, will begin at noon at the Hampden-Sydney Tennis Courts. Longwood's third home match of the weekend, originally scheduled for Sunday against Charleston Southern, has been postponed.
