BALTIMORE – First-year head coach Maria Lopez picked up her first win on the Division I level, as the Longwood women's tennis team dominated Coppin State, taking straight-set wins on every singles court and taking all three doubles matches to earn a 7-0 win Tuesday at CSU Tennis Courts.

Longwood (1-5, 0-3) started the morning strong, taking all three doubles matches with scores of 6-0, 6-3, 6-1 to set the tone for singles play.

"The outcome of the match was just the result of constant adjustments being made in all positions," Lopez said.

Marija Venta and Fallon Burger teamed up on court one for the 6-0 win over the Eagles' Tinashe Gwaze and Tanna Nita, while Paloma Alatorre and Jamie Breunig took court No. 2 6-3 over Precious Udofe and Carentxa Goede, and Mason Thomas and Anna Pelak took slot No. 3 over Ajla Hrnjic and Brittanie Cahua by a 6-3 margin.

In singles play, each Lancer captured a straight-set victory and had at least one 6-0 set in their respective matches, as Thomas, Burger and Pelak cruised for 6-0, 6-0 wins at courts four-through-six. Breunig took down Goede at the one-line 6-1, 6-0, while Venta defeated Cahua 6-2, 6-0 as the second seed and Alatorre swept past Udofe 6-2, 6-0 at line three.

"We were able to come into singles with a much more disciplined mentality," Lopez said. "I'm very proud of how they took care of business today.

Longwood opens their home slate on Sunday against Big South rival UNC Asheville after opening the season with six road or neutral site matches. Match time against the Bulldogs is set for 1 p.m.

"We still have a lot of work to do but I was glad to see them compete the way they did today," Lopez said.
