FARMVILLE, Va. - The University at Albany took the rubber match of the three-game set with Longwood, 13-6, Sunday afternoon at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
UAlbany (2-1) scored nine runs in the first three innings of the game, helped along by five errors and one wild pitch by Longwood (2-6) in the first three frames. Eight of UAlbany's 13 runs were unearned as Longwood committed six errors in the loss.
Derek Balbierz (1-0) picked up the victory for UAlbany after holding Longwood scoreless and picking up the final two outs of the fifth inning.
Tyler Wirsu (0-1) was hit with the loss after surrendering nine runs, five earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks issued.
The game got out of hand with a five-run top of the third inning for UAlbany. Back-to-back doubles from Kyle Sacks and Evan Harasta started the rally for the Great Danes, extending what was a 4-1 game into a 9-1 lead.
UAlbany was led by Matt Hincy at the dish as he finished the game with three RBI in a 2-for-4 game. Five players finished with multi-hit games for UAlbany.
Longwood was led at the plate by Alex lewis, who was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI in the loss. The senior is 5-for-his-last-6 following a 3-for-3 day in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Out of the bullpen
Zach Potojecki worked 4.0 scoreless innings for the Blue and White, strucking out six batters to lead a Lancer staff that had 14 punchouts on the day. Potojecki's performance cemented a weekend that saw the bullpen allow only four earned runs in 18.0 innings.
Longwood trailed 2-0 following UAlbany's two-run first inning, but the Lancers battled back with a run in the home half of the frame when
Antwaun Tucker scored on a
Justin Mitchell sacrifice fly. In the top of the second inning, after an error started the frame, a two-run home run by Travis Collins gave a multi-run lead back to Ualbany at 4-1.
Longwood returns to action Wednesday with a midweek matchup against George Mason. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. from Buddy Bolding Stadium.
