RICHMOND, Va. – A pair of big offensive innings for Richmond, helped along by Lancer mistakes, led the Spiders past Longwood, 11-7, Wednesday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Zach Kurtz tripled and scored a run on an error in the home half of the third inning to set the tone in what turned into a six-run frame that put Richmond (2-2) ahead of Longwood (1-4) for good. Three innings later Richmond put together a five-run sixth inning on just one hit in the frame to create further separation.
Richmond pushed across four unearned runs as Longwood was plagued by a number of mistakes throughout the game.
The Lancers committed season highs in errors, walks, wild pitches, and hit batters with four errors, six walks, three wild pitches, and four hit batters. In Richmond's five-run sixth inning the Lancers issued four free passes, hit two batters, and committed two errors, while the Spiders picked up just one hit in the frame.
Tim Miller (1-0) put together a quality start to shut down Longwood's offense. The freshman right-hander spun 6.0 innings with two runs allowed on four hits.
Zach Potojecki (0-1) took the loss for Longwood after allowing six runs, all earned, in 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and allowed nine hits.
Michael Osinski and
Justin Mitchell each stayed hot in the loss with multi-hit days. Osinski went 4-for-5 with his second home run of the season, a three-run homer in the seventh, and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Osinski is hitting a team-best .450, which includes a .750 average with runners in scoring position. Mitchell was 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI. Mitchell is hitting .375 through the first five games of the season with a team-high six walks drawn.
The Lancers battled back with a five-run top of the seventh inning to close the gap to four and got the potential tying run to the on deck circle, but the Lancers were unable to draw any closer.
Longwood returns to action with a three-game set against the University of Albany for a home weekend series. The series starts with a doubleheader at noon Saturday at Buddy Bolding Stadium.
