RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Spiders used a doubles sweep and four singles wins to knock-off the Longwood women's tennis team 5-2 on Friday afternoon in Richmond, Va. at the Westhampton Courts.
"As a team we are disappointed with another loss, but there is a lot we can learn from it," said first-year head coach
Maria Lopez. "The girls put in a great fight out there today but we need to continue to work hard to get us to the next level."
Freshman
Jamie Breunig got her first collegiate win for the blue and white at the No. 1 slot, taking down Richmond's Gaby Rosales – an Atlantic-10 Player of the Week earlier this season – in three sets by a score of 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7). Friday's match against the Spiders was the second time Breunig went three sets and the first since the season-opener against Temple.
Senior
Paloma Alatorre picked up the second Lancer point at the No. 3 seed, defeating the Spiders' Kiana Marshall in a 6-2, 6-2 sweep. The win was just the second time this season that Alatorre competed at the No. 3 spot after serving as the primary No. 4 in 2015-16.

Anna Pelak took the second set 6-2 to force a decisive third, before falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-0.
In doubles competition, the Spiders took each set by a score of 6-3 to get out to the early 1-0 lead.
Fallon Burger and
Marija Venta combined for the No. 1 line, while Alatorre and Breunig doubled up for the No. 2 slot, and Pelak and
Mason Thomas were at the No. 3.
Longwood (0-4, 0-1) gets an extended rest before hitting the road again, taking on Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Boiling Springs, N.C. Match time is set for noon
