HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A 24-9 run over the opening nine minutes, 13 seconds of the first quarter led Marshall to a 90-45 win over the Longwood women's basketball team in the season opener for both schools Friday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
Talequia Hamilton and Shayna Gore led the way for the Thundering Herd throughout the run, as the two combined for 11 of Marshall's 24 first quarter points. It was part of a first half explosion that saw Gore and Hamilton both finish in double figures, combining for 29 of Marshall's 48 first-half points.
Gore, a Conference USA Preseason All-Conference selection, scored 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half, as she finished 8-of-16 from the floor and to go along with six rebounds and four assists. The performance comes on the heels of a 21-point showing from Gore in the matchup between the two teams a season ago.
Meanwhile, Hamilton led a dominant Thundering Herd effort on the glass with 16 boards to go along with her 20 points, as Marshall outrebounded the Lancers by a 65-42 margin. Gore and Hamilton were two of four players for the Herd to finish in double figures, as Logan Fraley and Ashley Santigene each finished with 11.
The Marshall defense limited the Lancers to a .203 (15-74) shooting clip, a mark that's the lowest for the program in a single game since the squad shot just .182 in its contest at James Madison during the 2015 season. The Thundering Herd also limited the Lancers to 3-for-28 (.107) from beyond the arc.
Making their Lancer debuts were Kristina Antonenko, Casey Ripp, Que King and Stephanie Guihon. Antonenko and Guihon led the way for the newcomers, as Antonenko and King matched senior guard Micaela Ellis with a team-high nine points.
In addition to her nine points, Ellis had a team-best four assists, as the senior guard has finished with at least three assists in each of her last 10 games dating back to last season where she finished with the Division I record 133 assists.
King scored seven of her nine points in the final quarter while Antonenko was 3-of-7 from the floor in the second half.
Longwood will play its second straight game on the road Tuesday, Nov. 14, as the Lancers travel to N.C. Central for an 11 a.m., opening tip in its first of four Education Day games that it will take part in this season. Following the contest, Longwood will make its season debut inside Willett Hall against UMass-Lowell. That game is set for Saturday, Nov. 18, at noon.
