FARMVILLE, Va. – On a day that opened with the Longwood women's basketball program honoring its all-time wins leader Shirley Duncan with an honorary retired jersey, Charleston Southern guard Rachel Burns stole the show with a career-high 25 points to lead the Buccaneers to a 62-47 win over the Lancers Saturday afternoon inside Willett Hall.
Burns helped the Buccaneers use a 16-5 run to start the third quarter to stretch a three-point halftime lead to double figures and a 16-point Charleston Southern cushion. The Buccaneers were able to slash into the paint where they scored 40 of their 62 points and held a 40-10 scoring margin.
Burns paced the attack with a near double-double performance and her second 20-point performance of the season to go along with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals in 36 minutes. She finished the afternoon 11-20 from the field, including a 3-of-5 performance from beyond the arc.
Ke'Asia Jackson joined Burns in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-11 shooting, as well as two steals and an assist. Together, Burns and Jackson led the Charleston Southern starters, along with Elyse Kiploks, Alyssa Mann and Brianna Lakes, to score 49 of Charleston Southern's 62 points.
Charleston Southern (11-8, 5-3 Big South) earns its fifth win in its last six games since opening 0-2 in the conference slate. Meanwhile, Longwood (3-16, 0-8 Big South) drops its eighth straight.
Coming off a near double-double eight point, 11 assist day at Winthrop Tuesday,
Micaela Ellis paced the Lancer offense with nine points and six assists that led to 17 Longwood points. The performance from Ellis marked her 10th straight game with three-plus assists, as the Oak Park, Mich., product has averaged 5.2 assists throughout that stretch.
Kate Spradlin joined Ellis with nine points, while adding an assist and pair of rebounds.
Autumn Childress finished two points and one rebound shy of collecting her second straight double-double, as she finished with eight points and pulled down nine rebounds.
With many of her former players in attendance for Alumni Day, Longwood honored its all-time wins leader Duncan prior to tipoff. Duncan collected more than 300 wins in 23 seasons on the sideline while leading Longwood to four Division II NCAA Tournament berths.
Longwood will play its second straight inside Willett Hall Tuesday, Jan. 31 where the Lancers will face High Point at 7 p.m., in its annual pink game to bring awareness to breast cancer.
