Alatorre Blocks Sweep in 5-1 Setback at Campbell

Lancers Falter On the Road to No. 5 Team in Big South

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell took the first five points and cruised to a 5-1 win over Longwood in Big South women's tennis action Thursday afternoon at James R. Nisbet Tennis Center.

Sparked by a sweep of the doubles point, the Fighting Camels (10-7, 4-4 Big South) followed with four straight singles wins before Longwood No. 4 Paloma Alatorre blocked the sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Isabel Boada.

The win was the second straight for Campbell, which overtook sole possession of fifth place in the Big South standings. The Fighting Camels won all four of their singles bouts in straight sets to dispatch Longwood (7-10, 1-5 Big South) on senior day.

"We fought hard in doubles but came up short," said Longwood interim coach Rich Stoneman. "We gave away too many easy points in singles, and at this level, 'You give, and they shall take.' We dug ourselves a hole and couldn't get out of it. We're way better than we showed today. The ladies will rebound, I'm sure of it."

Campbell deployed a lineup led by the Big South's third-leading No. 1 player in Iri Karangozishvili, who defeated Lancer freshman ace Fallon Burger 6-4, 6-2 to improve to 12-5 on the season. Campbell No. 2 Georgina Segarra, who ranks third among Big South No. 2s with a 9-5 singles record, took care of Longwood's top veteran, Anna Pelak, 6-1, 6-3.

Maud Mrad clinched the win for the Fighting Camels with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 3 over Longwood freshman Isis Gill-Reid.

Alatorre picked up Longwood's lone win, her second straight in singles play.

Thursday's match is the second of a four-match road swing for the Lancers, who head to N.C. Central Saturday for a noon showdown before returning to Big South action Sunday at Presbyterian.
