Charleston So. Takes DH, Wins Series Over Lancers

The Buccaneers Earned 5-4 and 9-5 Comeback Wins to End Longwood’s Streak of 10 Straight Conference Series Wins

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern posted a pair of doubleheader comebacks, as the Buccaneers clinched a series victory with 5-4 and 9-5 victories over Longwood Saturday afternoon at CSU Softball Stadium.

With the victories, the Buccaneers (15-18, 3-3 BSC) end Longwood's streak of winning 10 straight Big South series, dating back to the 2014 season. Longwood falls to 14-11 on the season and 4-2 in Big South play, one game behind first-place Liberty.

"We really didn't play very good softball today," said head coach Kathy Riley. "We're not going to make any excuses about it. We're going to use this to refocus ourselves and make ourselves better."

Freshman Mariah Ellis led Longwood at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a triple, RBI and a run scored. She recorded multiple hits in each game, giving her third multi-hit game of the season. In addition, Glenn Walters went 2-for-5 at the plate with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. She extended her reached base streak to 27 straight games going back to the 2015 Knoxville Regional.

Sydney Mundell led the Longwood pitchers throughout the day, appearing in both games. She gave up four hits and struck out three batters in three total innings of work. In addition, she lowered her ERA for the season to 0.78 in six appearances and nine innings.

Up next, Longwood travels to East Carolina Tuesday, March 29 for a 5 p.m. first pitch, before hosting Winthrop in a three-game series beginning Friday at April 1.

Charleston Southern 5, Longwood 4
Charleston Southern came back on two occasions, as Georgi Delio belted two home runs to lead the Buccaneers past Longwood, 5-4, in the opening game of the day that included a two-hour rain delay.

Delio hit the go ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning after Stevi Johnson led off the inning with a walk and Lexie Venada laced a single through the right side. That brought up Delio, who belted a home run that hit and bounced over the top of the wall in left field.

The home run was part of a 2-for-2 day for Delio with both of her hits being home runs. Delio finished the afternoon with a game-high four RBI.

Sydney Gay (5-4) took the loss, allowing a career-high five runs on five hits in five innings. Sydney Mundell got an inning of work, allowing a hit while striking out two of the four batters she faced.

Arizona Pilgrim (6-3) earned the win, as she came on in relief for Hayley Elkins to start the second inning. Pilgrim gave up just two runs in six innings on six hits and a walk while striking out three batters. Elkins got the start, giving up two unearned runs while walking four batters.

For the Lancers, Ellis had her second career multi-hit game. The freshman reached base three times and was 2-for-3 on the day.

Charleston Southern 9, Longwood 5
Longwood scored four first inning runs and added a run in the second, but Charleston Southern plated nine runs in the first three innings to capture a 9-5 victory, sweep the doubleheader and clinch the series.

The Buccaneers tallied 14 hits – a season-high given up by the Longwood pitching staff – while Longwood recorded a season-high five errors. The nine runs is also the most given up by the Longwood pitching staff this season after they entered the day among the top-15 in the NCAA in team-ERA.

Five different Buccaneers tallied multiple hits in the game, as Charleston Southern combined for five hits that went for extra bases. Caitlyn Emberson led the Bucs with a 2-for-2 performance with two RBI, two runs scored and clubbed her second home run of the season.

Ellis recorded her second straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, while Glenn Walters hit her fourth home run of the season to leadoff the game. In addition, Emily Murphy went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Hayley Elkins (7-13) got the win, pitching the final six innings in relief. She allowed one run on one hit while striking out six batters. Elkins came on and allowed just five of the 23 batters she faced. Arizona Pilgrim started the game and lasted just 0.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits.
