Longwood Rolls To 6-1 Victory Over NC Central

Lancers Finish Three-Match Marathon With Six Victories

FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind a doubles point win and four singles wins, including the match-clincher by junior Florian Uffer, Longwood men's tennis came away with a 6-1 victory over visiting NC Central Saturday afternoon at Lancer Courts.

A product of Savognin, Switzerland, Uffer secured the match victory in singles with a win over NC Central (1-10) freshman Gabriel Cucalon to end Longwood's (5-9) two-match losing streak coming into its third match in three days. Uffer topped Cucalon in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles to also earn his first win in three matches.

"We played a serious match today," said Longwood head coach Pierre Tafelski. "It was important to win today and move forward into our next matches with confidence."

In addition to Uffer's win, the Lancers  received back-to-back wins by junior Rosen Ilchev and freshman Julian Farthing to set themselves for the match-clincher after three singles finishes.

After Longwood clinched the doubles point Ilchev beat NC Central's Dillon Strepay to put the Lancers up 1-0. Ilchev earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Strepay to end a four-match winless streak entering the day.

Back at the No. 3 after a one match hiatus, Farthing topped Davide Callegari 6-1, 6-1 to put the Lancers up 3-0.   The freshman standout also won his first match since his win against Hampton four matches ago.

Sophomore Alfonso Castellano picked up the fourth singles win of the day for Longwood with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Eagle Kert Kilumets at the No. 1. A native of Almeria, Spain, Castellano extended his consecutive win streak in No. 1 singles to two matches.

For the doubles point, Castellano paired with Farthing to give the Lancers the victory in doubles after a forfeit by NC Central at No. 3. The sophomore-freshman duo nearly swept NC Central pairing of Davide Callegari and Gabriel Cucalon with a 6-1 victory.

NC Central also forfeited its match at No. 6 singles due to an insufficient number of players available.

Longwood now will have a two-day break before hosting cross-town foe Hampden-Sydney in a 3 p.m. match on Monday, March 28.
