FAIRFAX, Va. – In its first match in 10 days, a well-rested George Mason squad took down a Longwood men's tennis squad playing its second road match in as many days, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the George Mason Tennis Courts.
The energy advantage the Patriots (6-8) held over the Lancers showed on the courts, as George Mason earned a near sweep in its first matchup against Longwood (4-9) since 2012. In spite of facing this disadvantage, however, the Lancers avoided being swept for the second match in a row after the setback to Richmond a day prior.
In the No. 1 position in both doubles and single play, Longwood sophomore
Alfonso Castellano broke up the Patriots' bid for the sweep across the board. The Lancers only point came with Castellano's 6-4, 6-3 win over George Mason senior Aaron Capitel which marked the sophomore's sixth win at the top spot this spring.
The product of Almeria, Spain, Castellano also teamed with freshman teammate
Julian Farthing in doubles to give the blue and white their only win in doubles. Longwood's freshman-sophomore pairing defeated the George Mason duo of Joe Hill and James Lange in a close match by a score of 6-4.
Longwood will now return home to host NC Central for the final of its current three-match marathon on Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at Lancer Courts.
