RICHMOND, Va. – After receiving a pair of clinching wins in both singles and doubles from junior Alexandre Felisa, Richmond cruised to a 7-0 victory over visiting Commonwealth-foe Longwood men's tennis Wednesday at the Westhampton Tennis Complex.
Felisa's 6-1, 6-4 win over Lancer junior
Florian Uffer in No. 2 singles sealed Richmond's (9-10) third win in a row in matchups vs. Longwood (4-8). Earlier in the day, Felisa teamed with fellow junior teammate Jacob Dunbar to beat Longwood duo
Alfonso Castellano and
Julian Farthing to secure the doubles point.
Farthing nearly helped Longwood block the sweep in the second to last singles finish, taking both sets to 10 games in his match at the No. 3 against Richmond's James Aronson. The freshman had a close first set that saw Aronson win 6-4, before Aronson held off a Farthing comeback attempt with another 6-4 win in the second set.
In the final singles match of the day, Longwood junior
Rosen Ilchev put up a fight at the No. 5 position before he ultimately fell to Richmond's Jonathan Quenard. After he took a close first set in which Ilchev stole three games, Quenard then outlasted Ilchev 6-2 in the second set to complete the Spiders' second sweep in their last three meetings with the Lancers.
"We played a very strong team today, but competed well," said head coach
Pierre Tafelski. "We will use the positive going into George Mason on Friday."
Longwood will now play its second match in as many days against another Commonwealth opponent when it takes on George Mason tomorrow at 2 p.m.
