Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Brown Reaches Milestone in Loss at Radford

Daeisha Brown Surpasses the 1,000-Point Mark, as Longwood Falls to Radford, 80-64

RADFORD, Va. – Longwood redshirt-junior guard Daeisha Brown became the third player in the Division I era and the 21st in the women's basketball program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark as she finished with a team-high 17 points, while the Lancers fell to Radford, 80-64, Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.

Brown, who needed 11 points to reach 1,000 coming into the day, hit a jumper just inside the free-throw line with 3:58 remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Richmond, Va., product 1,001 career points. Brown joins former teammates Chelsea Coward and Crystal Smith, as Longwood's three 1,000-point scorers since the Lancers became a member of Division I. In addition, Brown is the fastest player of the three to reach 1,000 career points, doing so in her 80th career game, bettering the 85 contests it took Coward to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

"It was a historic night for Longwood women's basketball," said Longwood head coach Bill Reinson. "Daeisha Brown became only the third player in the Division I era to score her 1,000th point. Given her struggles with injuries over the last few years, it's an incredible achievement that she reached her 1,000th point in her junior year. We're looking forward to many more to come."

After suffering a torn ACL last season as a junior, Brown has scored 17-plus points in three of her last seven games. In Saturday's game, she finished 5-of-12 from the floor, while adding six free throws, five rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes of playing time.

"It means a lot to score my 1,000th point in what is basically my junior year," Brown said. "This year has been a roller coaster ride, but I finally did it and it feels amazing."

However, Radford (14-12, 10-7 BSC) earned the win on senior day for Aisha Foy and Gaby Gilmore to earn its fourth victory in its last six games. Highlander forward Jayda Worthy and Janayla White each matched Brown's 17 points in the win, while Lydia Rivers secured a game-high eight rebounds.

Radford remains a half-game ahead of High Point in sixth-place in the conference standings, with both teams earning wins Saturday afternoon.

Radford took control of the game in the opening minutes of the second quarter, going on a 13-3 run over the opening 4:52 of the period. The run was sparked by White and Gilmore, who combined for 10 of Radford's 13 points during the stretch.

Meanwhile, the Radford defense held Longwood (6-20, 3-14 BSC) to .250 shooting in the first half, including a 2-for-12 performance from beyond the arc, while forcing 16 first-half turnovers.

Longwood junior Eboni Gilliam came within a point and three rebounds of a double-double. Gilliam finished the game with nine points and seven boards, extending her streak of grabbing six-plus boards to three games and the 18th time this season.

The game featured four of the top-10 rebounders in the Big South in Gilliam, along with Radford's White, Worthy and Rivers. Gilliam, who ranked eighth in the league coming into the game, brought down seven boards to hold her own against the Radford bigs.

Longwood has one week to prepare for its final road game of the season, as the squad travels to Liberty on Feb. 27 for a 3 p.m. opening tip.
