Lancers Suffer First Home Loss, 6-1 to Campbell

Longwood's 4-0 Home Record Receives First Blemish

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood women's tennis team's home unbeaten streak came to an end Thursday at the hands of Campbell, 6-1, at Lancer Courts.

Campbell (8-6, 4-2 Big South) entered the day winners of four of its past five matches  and on a three-match road win streak. The Fighting Camels rode the momentum from an early doubles sweep to take five of the six singles bouts and maintain their hold on a top-five spot in the league standings.

"It was a tough one today," said Longwood head coach Bruce Myers, whose Lancers fell to 4-1 on their home courts this season. "We spent extra time working on doubles, and we really played our best, most consistent doubles match all season. But we still lost the point. It's difficult to accept the fact that we overall played a good match, but we just aren't talented enough yet to compete with some of the top teams in our conference."

Fighting Camels ace Georgina Segarra keyed the win, upending Longwood No. 1 Malin Allgurin, 6-3, 6-2, to impede the Lancer senior's quest for 60 career wins. Allgurin, who recorded her 57th career win in Wednesday's 7-0 home sweep of Chowan, suffered only her second loss of the year on her home court.

Segarra's win was one of five in straight sets for the Fighting Camels. Tamara Stanic defeated Anna Pelak at No. 2, 7-6, 6-4, Irina Karangozishvil toppled Maria Coronel, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3, Maud Mrad took down Paloma Alatorre, 6-0, 6-4, and Camila Valencia defeated Nicole Parker 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6.

The only obstacle Campbell could not overcome came in the form of sophomore Mason Thomas, who gutted out a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Ana Maria Ortiz at No. 5 singles. Thomas improved to a team-best 13-6 on the year following the win and extended her win streak to five straight.

"Thankfully we have another big match coming up Saturday where we'll have a great crowd with the LancerStrong event," Myers said. "It's also senior day for Malin and Nicole, which I've had circled on my schedule for a long time. While I think we're theunderdog Saturday, I'm hoping we can play our best match of the year to honor our two seniors."

Longwood's senior day bout will be against Big South foe Presbyterian Saturday at 11 a.m.
