FARMVILLE, Va. – A career-high six goals from Colgate freshman Haley O'Hanlon offset another multi-goal performance from Longwood junior
Sarah Butler and powered the Raiders to an 18-7 win over the Lancers Wednesday afternoon at the Longwood Athletics Complex.
Â
O'Hanlon entered the matchup with goals in five of her first six collegiate games and took over as Colgate's leading scorer by netting six of her eight shots Wednesday. Lauren Gorajak also scored four times and Emily Peebles added three assists as Colgate (4-3) solved a Longwood defense that was coming off a 15-5 win over Mercer Friday.
Â
Shiloh McKenzie keyed Longwood's defensive effort with three ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls, and Longwood goalkeeper
Christian Acker racked up nine saves in the first half but could do little to stifle the Colgate offense in the second half. Despite coming out of the break with a 4-1 rally, Longwood allowed the O'Hanlon-led Raiders to end the game on an 8-0 run over the final 18 minutes.
Â
"On one hand, I loved the fight we came out with after halftime," Longwood head coach
Elaine Jones said. "We gained the momentum right away, which is something we've talked about doing. So the team did a great job with that.
Â
"On the other hand, once we lost that momentum, we again dug ourselves too big of a hole to get out of. We'll keep working on the little things in preparation for George Mason. I'm confident that the lessons we're learning now playing these challenging non-conference opponents will only help us once we hit our non-conference games."
Â
The Raiders bookended the win by scoring the first six and the final eight goals of the game, building a large enough cushion to withstand a Longwood rally midway through the first half before putting the game away over the final 18 minutes. O'Hanlon ignited both of those runs, scoring two of Colgate's first six goals and then netting her final three during that closing 8-0 run.
Â

After O'Hanlon asserted herself in boosting the Raiders to a 6-0 lead, Longwood responded with a 3-1 run that included a pair of goals from Butler. The junior midfielder, whose goals in the 20th and 29th minutes gave her five multi-goal games this season, set Longwood up to carry that momentum to halftime, but O'Hanlon and Megan Ark turned the tide with back-to-back goals inside the final minute to run the Colgate lead to 9-3.
Â
Despite the late run to end the first half, Longwood charged out of the locker room and got goals from
Katie McHugh,
Liz Trainer,
Sarah Arndt and
Riley Dolan during a 4-1 rally that cut Colgate's lead to 10-7. But after Dolan's fifth goal of the year – on an assist from Butler – capped the run, Colgate goalkeeper Jennie Berglin stole the momentum back for the Raiders and stopped Longwood's final six shots on goal.
Â
Longwood will now have four days to prepare for a Sunday, March 22 home matchup against George Mason at 3 p.m. That game precedes a March 25 home game against ACC member Louisville and the April 4 Big South opener against Coastal Carolina.
