Lancers Wrap Up Palmetto State Road Trip Against Big South Frontrunners

CONWAY, S.C. – Longwood's trip to the Palmetto State to take on two Big South unbeatens ended with a 7-0 loss to Coastal Carolina Sunday at the Coastal Carolina Tennis Complex.

Just one day after falling to conference leader Charleston Southern on the road, Longwood became the latest victim of another undefeated Big South foe when the Chanticleers (9-4, 3-0 Big South) handed the Lancers their second straight loss.

The win was the seventh straight for Coastal Carolina and improved their home record to 5-0.

"Playing the top two teams in the conference this week really showed how far we have to go to be competitive in the Big South," said Longwood head coach Bruce Myers, who has the Lancers off to a 6-9 overall record and a 1-5 mark conference play in his first season. "We are pretty far away from the top four, and we have a lot of work to do before the tournament to be more competitive."

Coastal Carolina took control of the match from the start, sweeping doubles play before Romane Delay  made quick work of her singles match and took down Longwood No. 3 Maria Coronel, 6-0, 6-4. The win was one of two on the day for Delay, who paired with Cari Berry to defeat Longwood's top doubles duo of Malin Allgurin and Alatorre, 8-3.

Delay's singles victory set the tone for a dominant day from the Chanticleers, who followed by sweeping the singles rounds. Allgurin, who sits just eight wins shy of tying Longwood's all-time wins record, came to within one game of knocking off Coastal Carolina's Libby Scott at No. 1, but suffered a 7-6, 6-0, loss after her near-win in the first set. The loss postpones Allgurin's pursuit of the record until March 21 at Radford.

The road showdown against the rival Highlanders Saturday will be Longwood's final road match until the regular season finale on April 10. Between those two bouts will be six consecutive home games at Lancer Courts where Longwood is 2-0 on the year.
