Longwood Can't Get Past UNC Asheville

Lancers Suffer 5-2 Defeat At Hands of UNC Asheville

LYNCHBURG, Va. – UNC Asheville rode the early momentum of a doubles point win to a 5-2 victory over Longwood Tuesday afternoon at The Sports Racket.

Playing at the home indoor facility of Liberty after conditions forced Longwood's home match to a neutral site, the Bulldogs (9-1, 2-1) got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles from Christian Boissevain and Lauren Brooker, and Amryn Soldier and Hunter Hall. UNC Asheville followed by winning four of the six singles bouts in straight sets, offset only by Longwood seniors Malin Allgurin at No. 1 and Nicole Parker at No. 6.

Allgurin and doubles partner Paloma Alatorre were on their way to a doubles win before the match was cut short with the duo leading 5-4. Allgurin got her win in singles play, however, upending Rivero 6-2, 6-2 for her third win in the past four matches. Allgurin, 7-5 on the year, has picked up five of her wins in straight sets and moved inside the top five on Longwood's single-season wins list with 52 career victories.

Parker also took down UNC Asheville's Lauren Brooker, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles for her fifth straight win and eighth of the season. Parker, in her fifth year at Longwood, now boasts a team-leading 8-3 record.

That win would be the last of the day for Longwood, however, as UNC Asheville swept the middle of the singles rotations with victories at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 for the team's third straight victory. McNally, Soldier, Boissevain and Hall handled those bouts, winning each in straight sets.

The loss is the second straight for the Lancers, who had won two in a row before falling, 6-1, at Winthrop Friday and to UNC Asheville Tuesday. Weather pending, Longwood will return to the Lancer Courts Wednesday for a showdown against St. Joe's beginning at 2:30 p.m.  The match will be part of a dual men's and women's showdown with the Hawks, as the Longwood men will also face St. Joe's at the same time.
