HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Longwood concluded play in the Pepsi Malihini Aloha Tournament with a pair of losses Saturday afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Lancers dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 18/19 Cal, before falling to San Jose State, 6-2, in the nightcap.
"We're still finding ourselves and today's games will go a long way in our development later," said Longwood head coach
Kathy Riley. "We made plenty of very good plays, but didn't have the positives outweigh the negatives. We had strong performances from
Libby Morris,
Megan Baltzell and
Haleigh Kilby."
Longwood (2-8) has now lost seven straight games after opening the season with a 2-1 mark, which marks the second longest losing streak for the Lancers since joining the Big South in 2012.
Haleigh Kilby and
Carly Adams were each named to the Pepsi Malihini Aloha All-Tournament team.
"We're excited about getting on the field come Wednesday," Riley said.
Longwood will have two days off to regroup, before playing its second tournament in the Aloha State. The Lancers will open play against Oregon State in the Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament on Wednesday, March 4.
No. 18/19 California 4, Longwood 3 (8)Longwood dropped its third game by virtue of the international tiebreaker this season to No. 18/19 California, 4-3, in eight innings in the first game of the day for the Lancers. The Lancers also had a season-high eight errors in the game.
The Lancers once again started strong, taking an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Emily Murphy walked to leadoff the frame, before
Megan Baltzell ripped an RBI single two batters later to score Murphy from second. Following an infield single from
Chelsea Sciacca,
Carly Adams drove in Baltzell to increase the Longwood lead to 2-0.
Cal (17-1) answered with an unearned in the third with the aid of two errors from the Longwood defense. Jazmyn Jackson led off the inning for the Bears and was able to advance to second base, following a fielding error from first baseman
Jamie Barbour. Cheyenne Cordes singled to center field to score Jackson from second.
The Bears tied the score in the fifth inning, as Kylie Reed reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second base on a wild pitch to Jackson. Reed scored from second after Longwood's fifth error of the day.
Cal took its first lead of the day an inning later, scoring another unearned run on a pair of Lancer errors. Danielle Henderson was able to reach base on a throwing error from Murphy and eventually came around to score on Murphy's second error of the inning.
Despite all of the errors, the Lancers tied the score in the home half of the frame. With two outs, Barbour struck out but reached first base on a passed ball.
Casey Lifsey drove her in two batters later.
With the international tiebreak rules in effect, Cordes scored the winning run off a throwing error by
Carly Adams.
Longwood threatened in the home half of the inning with
Krista Kelly advancing to third, but was unable to be pushed across.
Stephanie Trzcinski (8-0) picked up a victory, allowing just one hit and a walk in 2.1 innings in relief.
Libby Morris (1-3) took the loss for the Lancers, going all eight innings. She was charged with one earned run off six hits and three walks.
San Jose State 6, Longwood 2Longwood scored two times in the first three innings and twice jumped out to a lead, but San Jose State scored five unanswered runs to take a 6-2 victory in game two of the day.
Baltzell doubled to right field in her first at-bat and was brought home two batters later, with a
Chelsea Sciacca double to center field. Baltzell also scored the second run of the game for the Lancers in the third inning, after being hit by a pitch and coming around to score.
However, San Jose State (14-5) was able to answer Longwood's score both times. Jessie Hufstetler plated Michelle Cox on a sacrifice fly in the first inning, before three hits and a walk scored Brittany Abacherli and Alyssa Martinez.
The Spartans added to their lead in the fourth with a three-run inning, as the squad scored three runs off three hits. After allowing the first two batters to reach base with a pair of singles, San Jose State chased Longwood sophomore
Jenna Carnes (0-2) out of the game. She took the loss, giving up five runs and five walks in three-plus innings of work.
Morris came on in relief for Carnes, allowing one unearned run, four hits and one walk in three innings.
Madison Fish went the entire way for San Jose State, giving up two runs off five hits and a walk. She also posted seven strikeouts.
