Lancers Split a Pair of Games Saturday at Pirate Classic

Elizabeth McCarthy had a combined 12 strikeouts in 11.1 IP

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Longwood split a pair of games for the second straight day Saturday at the Pirate Classic hosted by East Carolina. The Lancers earned a 5-0 win over Oakland in the morning game, before falling to East Carolina in extra innings, 4-3.

Sophomore Elizabeth McCarthy had a big day in the circle for the Lancers, as she pitched 11.1 innings throughout the day and gave up one unearned run. McCarthy posted seven strikeouts in the contest against Oakland, before coming on in relief to record five strikeouts against East Carolina.

Longwood 5, Oakland 0

McCarthy led a strong defensive performance, as Longwood picked up its second shutout victory in as many days with a 5-0 win in the first game of the day over Oakland.

"When we give up no runs in seven innings it epitomizes what we want out of our team defense," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley. "We had solid performances on the mound and in the field."

McCarthy (1-1) was dominant in the circle, as she picked up her first win of the season. McCarthy had seven strikeouts, while allowing no runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work.

Sophomore Jenna Carnes made her first appearance pitching 3.0 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk. Carnes also added a strikeout.

Longwood had hits from seven different players, as the squad totaled 10 hits. Chelsea Sciacca, Emily Murphy and Casey Lifsey recorded two hits apiece.

Longwood scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning off five hits. A double from Murphy with two out proved to be the big hit of the inning, scoring Sciacca and Megan Baltzell to give the Lancers a 4-0 lead.

The Lancers added to their lead in the fourth, as Kelsey Sweeney drove in Baltzell.

Haley Zemmer took the loss for Oakland, allowing four runs on seven hits to go along with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings.

East Carolina 4, Longwood 3 (8 innings)

Longwood rallied to tie East Carolina with three runs in the top of the fifth, but went on to fall to the host Pirates in its first extra-inning game of the season, 4-3, in the second game of the doubleheader.

"It was a tale of two different teams," Riley said. "The first three innings we were not ready to compete at the highest level and the last five innings we played our hearts out. I look forward to taking those last five innings and making them our personality each and every day."

East Carolina knocked Longwood starter Libby Morris out of the game after three innings with two home runs to score three runs in the bottom of the third. Mary Sloan Bradford hit a two-run shot off a 1-1 pitch from Morris, before Abby Wynne hit a solo blast three batters later.

Morris exited after three innings, giving up three runs on six hits and recording two strikeouts.

Longwood responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to even the game. Casey Lifsey recorded a sac fly to score Murphy from third, before Katie Shinrock hit an RBI double to bring home freshman Krista Kelly. The Lancers scored their third run of the inning on a single from Baltzell – her sixth RBI in the two days.

The two teams went to extra innings with the game tied at three. East Carolina scored the game-winning run off the bat of Casey Alcorn, which scored Nicole Cheek.

Ashley Cruise (1-0) earned the win for East Carolina, allowing one hit and striking out two to go along with one walk in 3.1 innings pitched.

McCarthy (1-2) came on to pitch in relief for Morris and was credited with the loss. She tossed 4.1 innings giving up one unearned run on two hits, while striking out five and walking one.

Longwood will conclude play at the Pirate Classic Sunday with a rematch against East Carolina. The game is set for 2 p.m.
