Lancers Drop Pair of Hard Fought Games in Hawai’i

Longwood returns to action against Hawai’i Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET

HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Following a three-week break from competition, the Longwood softball team opened the Pepsi Malihini Aloha Tournament with a pair of losses Friday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. In the first game of the day, the Lancers fell to No. 18/19 California, 3-0, before dropping its second extra-inning game of the season to San Jose State, 6-4.

"In the two games today, we did some things well but we didn't complete either of the two games," said Longwood head coach Kathy Riley.

Longwood returns to action Saturday, as the Lancers play host Hawai'i at 8:30 p.m. ET.

No. 18/19 California 3, Longwood 0

California pitcher Stephanie Trzcinski limited Longwood to one hit in seven complete innings to improve to 6-0 on the season, as the No. 18/19 Golden Bears defeated Longwood, 3-0.

Trzcinski was phenomenal in the circle for the Bears, taking a no-hitter 5.1 innings until Jamie Barbour was able to break up the bid by knocking a 2-2 pitch into left field. The
Cal sophomore finished with a season-high six strikeouts, while issuing two walks in facing 24 batters.

Libby Morris (1-1) went toe-to-toe with Trzcinski for the first three innings, as the teams remained scoreless through 3.5 innings.

"We had a very strong pitching performance against Cal but just were not aggressive enough at the plate," Riley said.

The Golden Bears (15-3) were able to break through in the bottom of the fourth. Following a two-out single for Kostreba, Cal freshman Kobie Pettis singled to right center to move Kotreba to third. A wild pitch plated Kotreba and Cal was able to take the 1-0 lead.

The Golden Bears tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, as Kostreba was able to draw a lead-off walk. After Mary Lee came on as a pinch runner for Kostreba,
Vanessa Alvarez doubled to left field to plate Lee and increase the Cal lead to 2-0. The Bears scored their second run of the inning, as Jazmyn Jackson brought Alvarez home.

Morris pitched all six innings for Longwood, allowing three runs on three hits, while issuing six walks and recording four strikeouts.

San Jose St. 6, Longwood 4 (8)

Longwood was able to rally from a two-run deficit on two occasions, but San Jose State plated two runs in the top of the eighth to earn a hard-fought, 6-4, victory. The loss is the second time this season that Longwood has fallen in extra innings, as the Lancers previously fell to East Carolina, 4-3, in eight innings on Feb. 7.

"In game two, we gave ourselves several opportunities to win but just didn't get that one big hit to get us over the top," Riley said.

The Spartans (13-3) opened the scoring in the top of the first, as Hufstetler sent a 1-0 pitch to straight-away center field for her first homer of the day. The clean-up hitter for San Jose State posted a 3-for-3 effort on the day, including two RBI and two runs scored.

San Jose State added to its lead in the second after Emma Entzminger was able to draw a leadoff walk. Entzminger eventually came around to increase the San Jose State to 2-0 following a single by Michelle Cox and a throwing error on Longwood third baseman Krista Kelly.

The Lancers responded in the home half of the fourth inning to tie the game, 4-4. Glen Walters was able to draw a one out walk, before Carly Adams belted a 0-2 pitch to left center. Barbour knocked in Walters and freshman Kelsey Sweeney recorded an RBI single to tie the game.

The Spartans broke the tie in the next half inning, however, as the squad scored two runs, including the second home run of the day for Hufstetler.

Longwood rallied from its second two-run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a one-out double from Adams, Barbour ripped an RBI double down the left field line to bring in Adams. Two batters later, Casey Lifsey notched a single through the left side to plate Barbour and once again knot the game at 4-4.

After a scoreless inning, San Jose State was able to take advantage of the international tiebreaker rules, plating two runs in the top of the eighth. With Anessa Kaylor starting the inning on second base, Nicole Schultz was able to drive in Kaylor as the go-ahead run. The Spartans tacked on a second run three batters later when a sac fly from Sharen-Rena Estrada sac fly brought in Schultz.

Madison Fish (6-1) was able to retire the side in order to seal the 6-4 win for San Jose State. She earned the win pitching 2.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing a walk, two hits and recording a strikeout. She came on in the sixth inning for San Jose State starter Allison Lang, who allowed four runs off seven hits and two walks in 6.1 innings of work to go along with one strikeout.

Elizabeth McCarthy (1-3) took the loss for Longwood, as the southpaw pitched all eight innings. McCarthy allowed four earned runs, seven walks and 10 hits, while posting nine strikeouts.
