Longwood Tops Mary Washington, Stays Unbeaten

Lancers Improve to 3-0 Following Win Over 22nd-Ranked D-III Opponent

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. – Malin Allgurin and Anna Pelak won at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots to spark undefeated Longwood to a 5-2 victory over 22nd-ranked Division III squad Mary Washington Saturday afternoon at the Battleground Athletic Complex.

Allgurin and Pelak won in straight sets to avenge Mary Washington's win at the doubles point and improve the Lancers to 3-0 under first-year head coach Bruce Myers.

"This was a five-plus hour match, and it's always difficult playing a nationally-ranked Division III team, but the girls really battled," Myers said. "We didn't get the doubles win, which made it that much more difficult, but Malin [Allgurin] and Anna [Pelak] set the tone early."

Allgurin and Pelak made quick work of their opponents in singles action, winning in straight sets to put the Lancers on top 2-1. Allgurin knocked off Mary Washington ace Alex Ritter, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Pelak's 6-1, 6-4 victory over Caroline Mosberg at No. 2.

The back-to-back wins erased Mary Washington's early 1-0 after the Eagles upset Longwood's No. 1 doubles pairing of Allgurin and Paloma Alatorre, 8-2, and the No. 3 duo of Mason Thomas and Maria Coronel, 9-7, to claim the doubles point. Only the undefeated doubles pairing of Pelak and Nicole Parker blocked sweep, winning over Chrissy Gaul and Ashley Price, 8-6, to improve to 3-0 together this season.

And while Allgurin rebounded to put Longwood on the board first in singles action, Pelak and Parker stayed hot and followed with singles wins to give Longwood a 3-1 lead. Parker, playing at the No. 6 spot, took down Paige Weinberg, 6-3, 6-3, and is now a perfect 3-0 locking down the back end of the singles lineup.

Thomas also claimed a straight-set win at No. 5 to stay undefeated in her sophomore campaign, while Alatorre grinded out a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.

Longwood put its flawless record up against George Mason following the Mary Washington bout. Results will be available later this evening.
