Huland El Paces Virginia Past Longwood

Kyndal Skersick Led Longwood With 12 Points in 81-46 Loss

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A 16-0 Virginia run midway through the second quarter and a career day from sophomore guard Aliyah Huland El fueled the Cavaliers past Longwood 81-46 Sunday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.

A sophomore from Randolph, N.J., Huland El had her second-straight 20-point game, as she matched her career-high with 20 points to go along with a career-best seven rebounds. The sophomore also added two assists, two steals and a block in 28 minutes of playing time.

Huland El finished 9-of-14 from the floor and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, as the sophomore has scored at least 10 points in each of Virginia's four games this season, before posting back-to-back 20-point games with her performance Thursday at Auburn and Sunday afternoon against the Lancers.

For the Lancers (0-3), it marked their third straight game against either a top-25 team or a team receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll, after previously opening the season at then-No. 9/10 Oregon St. and James Madison.

"Aside from the result, I actually saw some promising things emerge from this game," said head coach Bill Reinson. "We weren't consistent, but I think the effort was there. We competed much better than we did last week. We knew the first part of our schedule would be tough."

Kyndal Skersick was Longwood's leading scorer for the second straight game, finishing with 12 points, including a 2-of-5 performance from beyond the arc. The senior added five rebounds to finish one shy of her career high of six boards in 24 minutes of playing time.

Junior Eboni Gilliam grabbed a team-best seven rebounds to go along with six points and one block in 24 minutes of action. Gilliam, a junior college transfer, posted her second straight game with at least seven boards.

After a Deborah Headen layup trimmed the Cavalier lead to five points eight seconds into the second quarter, Virginia went on a 16-0 run over the following 6:52 to extend its lead beyond 20 points with three minutes remaining in the opening half.

Virginia had four players finish in double figures, including Huland El (20), Faith Randolph (14), Breyana Mason (14) and Mikayla Venson (12). The Cavaliers (4-0) shot the ball 47 percent (33-of-71) on the day and controlled the boards, 51-27.

Defensively, the Cavaliers held the Lancers to 32 percent shooting for the game, while forcing 18 turnovers in the contest.

After opening the season with three straight games on the road, Longwood will play its first of 13 games on the season inside Willett as the squad hosts N.C. Central Tuesday, Nov. 24. The opening tip is set for 2 p.m.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how we progress the next two weeks," Reinson said.
