Blue Hose Outlast Longwood, 53-48

Longwood hit a season-high 11 three-point field goals in the game

CLINTON, S.C. – Presbyterian's Rebecca Walker had four of her 10 points in the final two minutes with the game on the line to lift the Blue Hose past Longwood, 53-48, Saturday evening inside the Templeton Center.

In a game that featured three ties and 12 lead changes, the Walker-led Blue Hose went on a 8-3 run to close the game and improved to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in Big South play.

"Overall a good effort tonight," said head coach Bill Reinson. "The loss is disappointing, but we did a good job of guarding their sets and they have a bunch of them. Near the end when we needed a stop, we just couldn't get one."

Longwood (2-16, 2-7) found itself down, 51-48, with less than a minute to play. Sophomore Brenna Robbins' straight-away three-pointer to tie with 23 seconds remaining bounced off the front of the rim and Presbyterian's Cortney Storey iced the game with two free throws.

Kyndal Skersick once again scored in double figures with 15 points. The junior matched her career-high with five three-point field goals and notched her fourth straight game in double figures. Robbins enjoyed her best performance of the season as she finished the night with a career-high 12 points. For the game, the Erie, Pa., product finished the night with a career-best three triples, as she was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

"Kyndal was outstanding tonight," Reinson said. "She shot the ball great. Brenna stepped up and made some shots as well. She never gets the attention, but she has been a warrior for us."

Skersick and Robbins spearheaded the Lancer offense which finished the night with a season-high 11 three-point field goals. The performance marks the third time this season that Longwood finished with double digit treys and the first time on the road.

Emily Nylen – who came into Saturday's game ranked fourth in the Big South with 1.83 blocks per game in conference play – was a force on the defensive end of the floor for the Lancers, as she matched her career-best with four blocked shots. The 6-5 sophomore added five points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal in a career-best 18 minutes of action.

"Emily continues to get better," Reinson said. "Hopefully, she can continue to increase her minutes."

Storey led Presbyterian with 11 points, while Walker and Allie Wagner each added 10 each. Walker and Storey combined for 18 points in the paint to help the Blue Hose build a 32-6 advantage in the lane and a plus-12 rebounding margin.

The Lancers allowed Presbyterian to jump out to a double-digit lead midway through the first half, but Longwood closed the opening half on a 11-2 run over the final 6:02 of the period to get within one point at intermission. Walk-on Shannon Mosby provided a spark off the bench, as the 5-3 guard helped Longwood lock down defensively and force Presbyterian to end the half with four turnovers and three missed field goals in its last seven possessions.

"Shannon gave us some energy off the bench," Reinson added.

The Lancers will have a week off to regroup before concluding the first half of the conference play when Charleston Southern travels to Willett Hall on Saturday Jan. 24. The game is set for a 2 p.m. tip.
