Longwood Splits At Winthrop: Win 10-6, Fall 4-3

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg had three hits and two RBIs, and senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake had two hits and two RBIs, to lead Longwood University to a 10-6 Big South Conference road win at Winthrop University in the nightcap for a day/night doubleheader split on Friday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.  The Eagles (23-32, 13-13 Big South) won the opener, 4-3, against the visiting Lancers (22-32, 9-17 Big South) on the strength of a two-run home run from Babe Thomas in the sixth inning before a pair of unearned runs late, including the game-winner in the ninth inning.  Longwood will play its final game of the season at Winthrop on Saturday, May 17 at 2 p.m. in Rock Hill, South Carolina in the finale of the three-game series.

In game two that was broadcast on ESPN3, Longwood scored two runs in the second inning to lead 2-0.  Burkett (3-5, 2 RBIs) doubled to center field with one out and scored on a two-out, RBI double to right center by freshman Alex Lewis/Burke (2-4, RBI), who later scored via a passed ball.

Winthrop got a run back in the second to make it 2-1 following a solo home run to right field by John Menken (2-5, RBI).

The Lancers added three more runs in the third inning to lead 5-1.  Sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-4) walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single to left field by Dickason (2-5, 2 RBIs).  Dickason crossed the plate on a run-scoring single to left from sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (1-5, RBI), and Burkett, who singled up the middle, also scored during the at bat via a wild pitch.

The Eagles, however, scored five runs in the third to take a 6-5 advantage.  Mark Lowrie (2-5, RBI), who also scored during the at bat, and Kyle Edwards (1-4, RBI) each contributed RBI singles, while Michael Patrick (2-4, 2 RBIs) had the big blow with a two-run triple to right center field.

Longwood answered back with three runs again in the fourth inning to lead 8-6.  Sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (2-4, RBI) reached on an infield single to shortstop, stole second and scored on an RBI single to right field by Dickason with one out.  Dickason also stole second and moved to third when junior Brandon Delk/Newport News (0-4) reached on a fielding error at third base, and he stole second too, before both runners scored on a two-run single to left from Burkett with two outs.  The Lancers added two more runs in the seventh inning to lead 10-6.  Lewis doubled down the left field line with two out and scored on an RBI single to right by freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (2-4, RBI).  Harvell stole second before scoring on another RBI single to right, this one from Burnette.

Junior Brandon Vick/Newport News started for Longwood and pitched the first 2.1 innings, allowing six hits and six runs, five earned, with one strikeout and four walks.  Burnette (3-5) tossed the next 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the win, allowing four hits with no strikeouts and one walk.  Freshman Devin Gould/Fairfax Station (2) pitched the final 5.0 shutout innings in relief for the save, yielding two hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.  Gould tied his career-high with the seven strikeouts.

Brock Goodling (1-3) pitched two-thirds of an inning of relief for Winthrop for the loss, allowing two hits and three earned runs with one strikeout and one walk.

In game one, Winthrop scored two runs in the sixth inning, getting a two-run home run to left field by Thomas (1-2, 2 RBIs).  The Eagles added a run in the eighth inning to lead 3-0 after Thomas walked, stole second and moved on to third via a throwing error on the steal, and scored on a two-out, bunt single to the left side of the infield by Chad Smith (2-4, RBI).

Longwood threatened in the seventh inning, getting a leadoff walk from Washington (0-3), followed by a one-out single through the right side by Dickason (1-4), but a strikeout and a fielder's choice ground ball stranded the two runners.  The Lancers, however, scored three runs in the ninth inning to tie it at 3-3.  Konvicka (1-3) was hit by a pitch to open the frame, followed by a one-out infield single off of the pitcher by Delk (1-4), and both runners scored ahead of Burkett (1-4, 3 RBIs), who hit a dramatic two-out, three-run home run to left field with two outs.  It was the third homer of the season for Burkett, and the team's first home run since April 19 at VMI.

Winthrop scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning, getting a leadoff single from Tyler Asbill (1-3), who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and on to third via a wild pitch, before crossing the plate courtesy of a two-out fielding error at third base.

Junior Aaron Myers/Newport News started for Longwood and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering seven hits and the two earned runs with eight strikeouts and four walks.  Freshman Ryan Jones/Fredericksburg tossed 1.0 inning of relief, allowing one hit and the unearned run with two strikeouts and one walk.  Classmate Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky (1-5) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning in relief for the loss, yielding one hit and the unearned run with one strikeout and one walk.

Jason Driver (5-5) pitched the final 1.0 inning of relief for Winthrop to gain the win, allowing two hits and two earned runs with no strikeouts and no walks.

The disappointing one-run loss in game one eliminated Longwood from any possibility of qualifying for the Big South Baseball Championship.
