Longwood Drops 6-1 Decision against Norfolk State on Senior Day

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision against in-state opponent Norfolk State University (11-6) on Monday afternoon at the Lancer Courts. Longwood was led by junior Dan Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England, who earned the team's lone win in singles play. The Lancers recognized their only senior, Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia, for Senior Day. Longwood (1-16) will close out the regular season at Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina University on Sunday, April 13 in Conway, S.C. at 2 p.m.

"It was disappointing for us not to finish better today for our senior," said head coach Jakob Gustafsson. "Ed has been great for us through the years and it is a pity this was his last home match. We fought very well though against a quality Norfolk State team. I know we will build on this heading into the conference tournament. We still have areas to fix, but it is encouraging to see how hard we are playing now."

Elston defeated Dzmitry Zyhmantovich in a three-set match 6-1, 0-6, 6-4, notching the Lancers' lone point of the day in the No. 1 singles position. Becker (6-2, 6-4) and junior Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. (6-2, 6-3) both faced setbacks in their matches at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Freshman Warren Bryan/Greensboro, N.C. played at the No. 4 spot where he fell in a 7-6 (6-4), 7-5 decision. Sophomore classmates Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas (2-6, 6-2, 6-0), and Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen (7-6 (7-5), 6-1) dropped the remaining singles matches in the remaining positions.

In doubles play, the Lancers battled, but were unable to secure the point. At the No. 1 spot, Elston and Becker lost to Zyhmantovich and Ramstormer-Pello 8-5. Johnson and Fudge then fell 8-6 at No. 2, and Bryan and Sankar were bested 8-3 at No. 3.
