Colton Konvicka/Richmond had three hits for the visiting Lancers (14-19, 4-8 Big South) against the South Division Runnin' Bulldogs (14-18, 6-6 Big South), who swept the three-game weekend league series. Longwood will play a non-conference game at Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Wednesday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at English Field in Blacksburg.
Longwood scored two runs in the first inning to lead 2-0. Konvicka (3-4) opened the game with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single to left by senior captain

Gardner-Webb scored a run in the fourth inning to make it 2-1. Alex Newman (2-4, RBI) doubled to plate Matt Simmons (2-4), who had singled. The Runnin' Bulldogs took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the fifth inning. Coleman (1-4, 3 RBI) delivered the big blow with his three-run home run to left center field that also scored Brantley Smith (0-3), who had reached on a throwing error at third base, and Henry Rundio (0-3), who had walked.
The Lancers closed to within 4-3 with a run in the sixth inning but could get no closer. Washington reached on a two-out single, stole second and crossed the plate on an RBI double to right center field from Burkett. The visitors threatened in the eighth inning, loading the bases with two outs, but a ground ball ended the opportunity.
Junior
Brandon Vick/Newport News (3-3) started for Longwood and pitched the complete-game 8.0 innings for the tough-luck loss, scattering eight hits and four runs, three earned, with a season-high eight strikeouts and three walks.
Heiligenstadt (2-4) started for Gardner-Webb and pitched the first 6.0 innings for the win, allowing eight hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts and no walks. Brad Haymes (2) tossed the final 3.0 shutout innings for the Bulldogs for the save, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.
