Sarah Moomau/Winchester, along with freshmen
Paloma Alatorre/Katy, Texas and
Mason Thomas/Buchanan Dam, Texas each won in singles to lead Longwood University to a 5-2 non-conference women's tennis road victory at Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Tuesday in Norfolk. The visiting Lancers (3-7) also won two of three doubles matches toward the triumph against the host Spartans (7-8). Longwood will return home to host Big South Conference opponent Coastal Carolina University on Wednesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. at the Lancer Courts in Farmville.
"Today we showed up and took care of business," said first-year head coach
Casey Wharton. "Norfolk State is solid, from top to bottom, but we came out, brought a lot of energy, and executed our shots brilliantly. I am proud of how we battled for every point. Now we come back and prepare Coastal tomorrow!"
In the match-opening doubles competition, Alatorre and freshman
Anna Pelak/McLean won at No. 2 against Mafalda Lhorca and Krystal Scott, 8-2, and Thomas and Law won at No. 3 against Yvonne Kamegne and Marie Habiyaremye, 8-6. Junior
Malin Allgurin/Värnamo, Sweden and Moomau fell at No. 1 against Andrea Macchiavello and Liza Gordeeva, 7-8 (4-6).
In singles play, Alatorre won at No. 2 against Macchiavello, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3; Moomau won at No. 3 against Lhorca, 6-0, 6-4; Thomas won at No. 5 against Scott, 6-1, 6-3; and Law won at No. 6 against Ana Popovic, 6-2, 7-5. Allgurin fell at No. 1 against Gordeeva, 6-7 (4-6), 2-6; and Pelak fell at No. 4 against Kamegne, 6-7, 1-6 (4-2).
