Longwood Splits At Radford But Wins Series

RADFORD, Va. -- Sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect hit a home run in each game, and senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake and classmate Scott Burkett/Williamsburg each had two hits in the first game, to lead Longwood University to a split of a Big South Conference baseball doubleheader at Radford University on Monday in Radford.  The visiting Lancers (14-15, 4-5 Big South) won the opener, 5-4, getting a solid pitching effort from junior Brandon Vick/Newport News that earned the series win (2-1).  The fellow North Division Highlanders (15-11, 6-3 Big South) took the nightcap, 8-3, behind solid pitching by Ryan Meisinger and two hits and three RBI from Hunter Higgerson.  Longwood will play a non-conference game at home against the University Richmond on Wednesday, April 2 at 5 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
   
In game one, Radford got on the board first with a run in the third inning to lead 1-0.  Chris Coia (3-4) reached on a bunt single to lead off and later scored with one out on a fielder's choice RBI sacrifice bunt from Josh Reavis (1-4, 2 RBI).
   
Longwood scored a run in the fourth inning to tie it at 1-1.  Senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-3) singled to open the frame and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-4, RBI).
   
The Highlanders scored an unearned run in the fifth inning to go back in front, 2-1.  Coia reached via a fielding error at second base and later scored on an RBI single from Reavis.
   
The Lancers added another run in the sixth inning to tie it again at 2-2.  Junior Travis Biddix/Richmond (0-3) drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (0-3) and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Dickason (2-5, RBI).  The visitors took their first lead with two runs in the seventh inning to make it 4-2.  Owens walked and later scored on a run-scoring single by junior Brandon Delk/Newport News (1-1, RBI), who was pinch-hitting, and freshman Alex Lewis/Burke (1-5), who had reached on a fielding error at shortstop, crossed the plate on a throwing error.  Longwood added a much-needed insurance run in the eighth inning to lead 5-2.  Washington (1-4, RBI) hit a solo home run to left field to begin the inning.  Burkett (2-4), who had two hits in the game, added a double during the at bat, but was left at third.
   
Radford scored two runs in the eighth to provide for the final margin.  Higgerson (1-3) tripled with two outs and scored on a passed ball, while Zach Woolcock (1-1) singled and was replaced by pinch runner Luke Wise, who scored on an RBI single from Blake Sipe (2-3, RBI).
   
Vick (3-2) started for Longwood and pitched the first 7.2 innings for the win, scattering eight hits and four runs, three earned, with six strikeouts and four walks.  Freshman Mitchell Kuebbing/Burlington, Kentucky (2) tossed the final 1.1 scoreless innings for the Lancers to earn his second save in two games, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.  James Woods (3-1) pitched 1.0 inning of middle relief for Radford and took the loss, allowing one hit and two runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and two walks.
   
In game two, Longwood scored first in the third inning with a run to lead 1-0.  Harvell (1-3) reached on a fielder's choice and scored with two outs when Washington (1-4, RBI) reached via a fielding error on a pop fly to shallow left field.
   
Radford scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 advantage.  Reavis (0-2) was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI single from Sipe (1-5, RBI), who later crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Higgerson (2-4, 3 RBI).  Coia (2-4), who had reached on a bunt single, also scored during the at bat via an RBI single by Josh Gardiner (3-5, 2 RBI).  The Highlanders added a run in the sixth inning to lead 4-1.  Coia singled, stole second and later scored courtesy of a wild pitch.  RU scored again in the seventh inning to lead 5-1.  Gardiner doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Woolcock (1-4, RBI).
   
Longwood added a run in the eighth inning to make it 5-2.  Washington hit his second home run of the day, a two-out, solo blast to left field for his team-leading seventh homer this season.
   
Radford scored three more runs in the eighth to lead 8-2.  Aaron Scoville (2-4) doubled and scored on a single by Gardiner, followed by a single from Shane Johnsonbaugh (1-1) and a two-run double by Higgerson.
   
Longwood scored a final run in the ninth inning for the final margin.  Owens (2-4) singled and scored on a sac fly by Delk (0-0, RBI), who was pinch-hitting again.
   
Sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (1-4) started for Longwood and pitched the first 4.1 innings for the loss, yielding four hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks.  The Lancers used five pitchers in the nightcap.  Meisinger (3-0) started and pitched the first 8.0-plus innings for Radford, scattering seven hits and three runs, one earned, with nine strikeouts and no walks.
