FARMVILLE, Va. --
Victories by Yasmin Doost and Jenny Lunde in singles, and the combos of Lunde and Rokia Sacko, as well as Mary Walker Mixon and Teodora Stanciu led Gardner-Webb University to a 6-1 Big South Conference women's tennis victory at Longwood University on Saturday in Farmville.  Freshman Anna Pelak/McLean earned the lone win in singles for the Lancers (2-6, 1-4 Big South) at No. 4 against the visiting Runnin' Bulldogs (9-8, 2-4 Big South).  Longwood will welcome Division II opponent Virginia State University to Farmville on Tuesday, March 25 at 2 p.m.

"We had our chances today, we just didn't capitalize on them," said first-year Longwood head coach Casey Wharton.  "This was a good team, but certainly one that was within our reach, which makes it even tougher.  We are a young team, and I have no doubts that the wins will come, sooner than later.  But right now it's hard, because we are ready to see our hard work pay off.

"We are undoubtedly getting better, but I think as time goes on, and we keep working, we will be better prepared, and be more battle tested for matches like today … and those matches that could go either way, will start falling our way.  Until then, we'll keep pressing on!"

In doubles competition, junior Malin Allgurin/Värnamo, Sweden and senior Sarah Moomau/Winchester defeated Ronia Hutterli and Doost at No. 1, 8-6, but freshman Paloma Alatorre/Katy, Texas and Pelak fell at No. 2 against Lunde and Sacko, 8-0, and freshman Mason Thomas/Buchanan Dam, Texas and senior Bethany Law/Ona, West Virginia fell at No. 3 to Mixon and Stanciu, 8-6.

In singles play, Doost defeated Allgurin 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Lunde defeated Alatorre 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, Hutterli defeated Moomau 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3, Pelak got the lone point by defeating Popka at No. 4 6-3, 6-4, while Sacko defeated Thomas 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5, and White defeated Law 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
