Brandon Vick/Newport News pitched 6.2 solid innings, to lead Longwood University to a 9-4 Big South Conference baseball victory past Charleston Southern University on Saturday at Bolding Stadium in Farmville. Chase Shelton and Nate Blanchard each had two hits for the visiting South Division Buccaneers (14-6, 1-1 Big South), and Tyler Weekley took the mound loss against the host Lancers (10-10, 1-1 Big South). Longwood and Charleston Southern will wrap-up their three-game weekend series on Sunday, March 16 at 12 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
Charleston Southern took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, getting consecutive one-out doubles from Bobby Ison (2-5) and Shelton (2-5, RBI), the latter by Shelton scoring Ison.
Longwood, however, answered with three runs on five hits to lead 3-1 after one inning. Dickason (3-5, 2 RBI) opened with a solo home run to left field, his first of the season, before four-straight singles from Washington (4-5), junior

Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-4, RBI) and senior
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (2-3, RBI) … the latter two by Owens and Burkett scoring Washington and Delk.
The Buccaneers scored two runs on four hits in the second inning to tie it at 3-3, as Zack Hagaman (2-4) singled and later scored on a ground ball by Sam Remick (1-4, RBI), while Will Hartsell (1-3) singled and later scored on an RBI single by Blanchard (2-4, RBI).
The Lancers once-again responded well with a one-out triple from Dickason and a two-out RBI single by Delk to go back in front, 4-3.
Charleston Southern added another run in the third inning to tie it again at 4-4, after Nick Berry (1-4) singled with one out and scored with two outs on a misplayed ball at shortstop.
Longwood answered again with a run in the third to lead 5-4, getting a one out double from sophomore
Colton Konvicka/Richmond (2-4), followed by a run-scoring single by freshman
Alex Lewis/Burke (1-4, RBI). The Lancers made it 6-4 with a run in the fourth inning, as Washington doubled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch, after he had advanced to third on a wild pitch, as well. Longwood scored three runs in the fifth inning to lead 9-4. Konvicka and Lewis reached via a single and a fielder's choice, respectively, before a clutch two-out, two-run double by freshman
Brandon Harvell/Yorktown (1-4, 2 RBI) that was followed by an RBI single from Dickason that plated Harvell for the eventual five-run margin.
Vick (2-1) started for Longwood and pitched 6.2 solid innings, scattering 12 hits and four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore
Travis Burnette/Lynchburg tossed the final 2.1 shutout innings for the Lancers, yielding just one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.
Weekley (3-1) started for Charleston Southern and went only 2.1 innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs with one strikeout and no walks. The Buccaneers used three additional pitchers in the game, including Tyler Dyson who went the final 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed three hits with no strikeouts and one walk.
