Longwood Rallies Past Visiting Norfolk State 6-4

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Junior Brandon Delk/Newport News had four hits and an RBI, sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect had two hits and three RBI, and senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake had the game-winning RBI single in the seventh inning as Longwood University rallied for a 6-4 non-conference baseball victory past Norfolk State University of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on Wednesday afternoon at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  Senior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg gained the pitching win in relief for the Lancers (9-9), while sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg earned another save against the visiting Spartans (3-13).  Longwood will open Big South Conference action this weekend with a three-game series against Charleston Southern University that begins on Friday night, March 14 at 6 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
   
Longwood took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-4) reached on a single to the right side and stole second base before a one-out walk to senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (0-3).  Delk (4-4, RBI) promptly followed with a run-scoring double to right center field.
   
Norfolk State tied it at 1-1 in the third inning with an unearned run after a sacrifice fly by Andre' Moore (0-3, RBI) scored Omar Hotusing (1-4).
   
Longwood went back ahead 3-1 in the fourth inning with two runs after an infield single by Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania (2-4, RBI) with one out, and a two-out walk to Konvicka had runners on the corners.  Washington (2-5, 3 RBI) plated both with a line drive double over the head of the left fielder.
   
Norfolk State took a 4-3 advantage in the fifth inning with three runs on two hits, including a two-run single by Cameron Day (1-4, 2 RBI) and a run-scoring single from Tyon Ore (2-4, RBI).
   
Longwood took a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning when Washington hit a solo home run to left field, his second homer this season, before a two-out RBI single by Dickason (2-3, RBI) scored Delk, who had reached on a single for his fourth hit of the game.  The Lancers added an insurance run in the ninth inning on the first collegiate home run by McCafferty, an opposite field solo drive to left field, for the final two-run margin of victory.
   
Freshman Luke Simpson/Danville started for Longwood and pitched the first 3.2 innings, scattering three hits and one run, unearned, with no strikeouts and three walks.  Sophomore Blake Ream/Yorktown tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Lancers, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and one walk.  Burkett (1-0) went 1.1 shutout inning for his first win this season, and only the second of his career, allowing one hit with one strikeout and no walks.  Burnette (4) got the final three outs for his fourth save this season, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
   
Cooper Jones (0-2) pitched 2.2 innings of middle relief for Norfolk State and took the loss, allowing three hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk.
