Box Score FARMVILLE, Va. – Sophomore
Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Fla. went a perfect 6-for-6 at the foul line and totaled a game-high 19 points for the Longwood University women's basketball team in a 66-61 defeat against Big South Conference opponent Presbyterian College (7-17, 5-10) on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers led by as many as five in the second half before PC used a 25-7 run to take a 13-point advantage that the home squad was unable to overcome. Keyonna Allen led three double-digit scorers for the Blue Hose with 16 points, while adding 12 rebounds in the victory. Longwood (7-17, 4-11) will take its final road trip of the regular season next week with a pair of games in North Carolina beginning at Gardner-Webb University on Thursday, February 13. Tipoff for that contest is slated for 7 p.m.
"Give Presbyterian credit," said head coach
Bill Reinson. "They played harder and wanted the game more than we did. Our defense was awful and that was the worst rebounding effort we had all year.
Kyndal Skersick continued her outstanding play on the offensive end. Offense was not our problem today, however."
Longwood jumped in front with a 5-0 lead thanks to a three from Skersick and a layup from classmate
Daeisha Brown/Richmond to open the game. PC answered, as the teams were tied on two occasions before the Blue Hose put together an 8-2 spurt to take a 15-9 advantage with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Lancers followed with seven consecutive points to regain a one-point lead, but after another tie at 18-18, Presbyterian logged a pair of field goals to create a five-point buffer with 5:35 to play in the first. Skersick converted on a pair of free throws and drained a deep three to knot the score for the fourth time of the afternoon at 23-23, however, after the squads traded one bucket apiece, the Blue Hose hit two three-pointers in the final minute to take a 30-27 edge into halftime.
The Lancers scored seven of the first nine points coming out of the break to reclaim the upper hand at 34-32 with just over 16 minutes left to play. Although the visitors tied the score once again less than a minute later, sophomore
Khalilah Ali/Suffolk and redshirt-senior
Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas knocked down jumpers to put Longwood on top, 40-35, with 12:15 remaining. PC followed with a 25-7 run that spanned seven and a half minutes to take its largest lead of the day at 60-47 with 4:35 to go. The Lancers would not make it easy for the Blue Hose in the waning minutes, though, cutting the difference to nine with three points from sophomore
Raven Williams/Richmond and a jumper from beyond the arc by Skersick to make the score 62-53 with just under 1:43 left. Longwood outscored PC, 8-4, before the clock expired, but the Blue Hose held on to take the 66-61 decision.
Skersick drained three of her five field goals from beyond the arc in the outing. Williams added to the Lancers' offensive effort with 12 points, six assists and three steals. Ali totaled eight points with a team-best four rebounds, as well. As a team, the Lancers shot 48% (22-46) from the floor, including 31% (5-16) from beyond the arc, and 80% (12-15) from the line in the outing.
PC controlled the glass in the contest, taking a 40-13 advantage on rebounds. Karlee Taylor and Aianna Kelly rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Blue Hose with 15 and 13 points, respectively. As a whole, Presbyterian shot 50% (22-44) from the field, 56% (9-16) from three-point territory and 65% (13-20) from the foul line.
Saturday's contest marked the eighth meeting ever between Longwood and Presbyterian in the sport of women's basketball. The Lancers still hold a slight, 5-3 edge in the all-time series.
