Longwood Wins Series Opener At Wofford 7-1

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake had four hits and an RBI, sophomore C.J. Roth/Yorktown had a hit and two RBI, and junior Aaron Myers/Newport News pitched a complete-game with nine strikeouts, to lead Longwood University to a 7-1 non-conference baseball road victory at Wofford College of the Southern Conference on Friday evening in Spartanburg, South Carolina.  The visiting Lancers (5-5) and host Terriers (5-4) will continue their three-game weekend series on Saturday, March 1 at 2 p.m. in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

"It's always tough to go on the road and win a ballgame, especially against a quality team like Wofford," said first-year head coach Brian McCullough.  "Winning the game and having our starter go the complete game sets us up well for the rest of the weekend.  Hats-off to Aaron on his effort and grinding it all the way until the end, and hats-off to our offense that came up with some clutch hits.  We really played the game the right way today."

Longwood took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the fourth inning when junior Brandon Delk/Newport News (1-5) reached on a walk to open the frame, moved to second on a one-out ground ball and scored on a two-out, RBI double by freshman Mac McCafferty/Stevens, Pennsylvania (1-3, RBI).  The Lancers made it 3-0 in the fifth inning as freshman Alex Lewis/Fairfax Station (1-1, RBI) walked to lead-off, moved to second on a passed ball and crossed the plate on a run-scoring double from senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-4, RBI).  Owens advanced to third on a single by Dickason (4-5, RBI) and scored on an RBI grounder by sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect (2-5, RBI).

Longwood added another run in the sixth inning to lead 4-0 after Roth (1-4, 2 RBI) reached base via a passed ball while striking out, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from McCafferty and scored on a two-out, RBI single by Lewis.

Wofford managed an unearned run in the sixth inning for a 4-1 margin following a two-out single by Seth Neely (2-4), who stole second and moved on to third courtesy a throwing error on the stolen base.  He scored on an infield single by James Plaisted (1-3, RBI).

Longwood plated two more runs in the seventh inning to lead 6-1 when Dickason and Washington opened with back-to-back doubles and both scored on a two-out, two-run single by Roth.  The Lancers made it 7-1 with a run in the eighth inning as Lewis drew a one-out walk, stole second with two outs and crossed the plate via a two-out, RBI single from Dickason.

Myers (2-0) took care of the rest for Longwood, going the distance for the Lancers and scattering seven hits and one unearned run with the nine strikeouts and no walks.  It was his second consecutive nine-strikeout effort, and the fourth time in his career that he has recorded nine strikeouts, a career high.

Matthew Milburn (1-1) started for Wofford and pitched the first 6.2 innings, yielding eight hits and six runs, four earned, with five strikeouts and three walks.
