Longwood Faces 6-1 Setback at William and Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team faced a 6-1 setback against the Tribe of William and Mary (9-6) Sunday evening at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Lancers were led by sophomore James Fudge/Kaarst, Germany, who won the only singles match of the night for the team. Longwood (1-6) will return to action on Thursday, February 27 when the squad plays its first Big South Conference match of the year at Presbyterian College in Clinton, S.C. at 2 p.m.

"Today we played without our top player, which is like playing without your point guard in basketball, it just changes everything," said head coach Jakob Gustafsson. "It did not stop us from competing really well, though, against a quality program. I was really happy to see how hard we played in every single position. I trust we will be able to compete like this each time from now on as we continue to play better."

Fudge topped William and Mary's Zach Braig 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 6 position for the Lancers. Senior Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia and junior Steed Johnson/Ashokie, N.C. both fell at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, 6-0, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively. In the No. 3 slot, freshman Warren Bryan/Greensboro, N.C. was defeated 6-1, 6-4. In remaining singles action, sophomore Justin Higgs/Nassua, Bahamas (6-3, 6-2) faced a setback at No. 4 and classmate Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen (6-0, 6-2) fell at No. 5.
