Longwood Falls On The Road At James Madison 14-7

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Kyle Weston had three hits and three RBI, and Kevin Husum had three hits and two RBI, to lead James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association to a 14-7 non-conference baseball victory past Longwood University on Wednesday in Harrisonburg.  Sophomore Kyri Washington/Prospect had three hits and one RBI, and junior Brandon Delk/Newport News added three RBI, including a two-run home run, for the visiting Lancers (1-3) against the Dukes (2-2).  Longwood will play its home opening series this weekend, February 21-23, against Marist College of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, beginning on Friday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. at Bolding Stadium in Farmville.
   
Longwood took an early 4-0 lead at JMU with four runs in the first inning.  Sophomore Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-2) opened with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third base.  Washington (3-5, RBI) plated Konvicka with a one-out, RBI single and scored ahead of Delk (1-5, 3 RBI), who slammed a two-run home run to right center field, his second homer this season.  Senior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-3, 2 RBI) reached on a fielding error that allowed him to advance to second, and after a walk, he scored unearned via a two-out, RBI single by freshman Alex Lewis/Burke (1-3, RBI).  The Dukes answered with three runs on three hits in their half of the first, including a two-run homer by Matt Tenaglia (1-3, 2 RBI).
   
JMU added single runs in the second and third innings, including an RBI double from Chad Carroll (2-5, 2 RBI) in the second.  The Dukes scored two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Husum (3-5, 2 RBI), and plated five runs on four hits in the sixth inning to lead 12-4.  Carroll led off the sixth with a solo homer and Weston (3-5, 3 RBI) added a two-run single.  JMU scored two final runs in the eighth inning, including an RBI double by Ty McFarland (2-5, 2 RBI).
   
The Lancers scored three runs on three hits in the ninth inning to provide for the final margin.  Freshman Keith Roberts/Midlothian pinch-hit to open the at bat and singled ahead of a walk to sophomore Travis Burnette/Lynchburg and a single from senior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-4) that loaded the bases.  Another fielding error allowed Roberts to cross the plate, before a two-run single by Owens scored Burnette and Dickason.
   
Freshman Luke Simpson/Danville started for Longwood and pitched the first 2.0 innings, scattering four hits and four runs, three earned, with one strikeout and one walk.  Sophomore Blake Ream/Yorktown (0-2) was the second of five pitchers and tossed 2.0 innings for the mound loss, yielding three hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
   
Michael Howerton (1-0) was the third of six pitchers for JMU and went 3.2 scoreless innings for the decision, allowing one hit with five strikeouts and one walk.
