RICHMOND, Va. – The Longwood University men's tennis team fell to in-state opponent VCU (5-2) in a 5-0 decision before topping Morgan State University (0-2), 4-1, in a doubleheader at the Thalimer Tennis Center on Saturday in Richmond. The Lancers were led by junior
Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England, who won a hard-fought, three-set match in the No. 1 position against Morgan State. Longwood (1-3) will play again next week against North Carolina State University on Sunday, February 9 at 6 p.m. in Raleigh, N.C.
"VCU is one of the top teams in the nation and showed that today," said head coach
Jakob Gustafsson. "They didn't hold back and played their top players against us. It was a very good experience for us to play them and we showed that we belonged out there.
"It was great for this team to finish the day off with a win. We talked all week about not playing the best tennis, but instead being the best out there. We showed great effort, discipline and tactics to pull this win off. Morgan State has a quality team and I was very happy to see us come back late in matches to win even without our best tennis."
