Longwood opens conference play Tuesday, Dec. 2 at High Point

Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary's Marlena Tremba made two of her season-high four three pointers in the first four and a half minutes of the contest to help the Tribe race out to an early lead over Longwood that it would not relinquish.

The Tribe utilized an overall strong shooting performance to defeat Longwood, 90-55, Saturday afternoon inside Kaplan Arena. Longwood falls to 0-5 on the season, while William & Mary improves to 4-2.

"We weren't prepared to play today and that's my responsibility," said head coach Bill Reinson. "We were very passive offensively and defensively. We need to break it down and focus more on fundamentals."

Deborah Headen led the Lancers with a team and season-high of 19 points, while Kyndal Skersick tallied eight points and Khalilah Ali added seven points. Ali, Headen and Emily Nylen paced Longwood on the boards with four rebounds each, while Raven Williams notched a team-high three assists.

Tremba led William & Mary in scoring with a game-high 19 points, while Alexandra Masaquel and Mackenzie Morrison also finished in double figures with 10 points each.
William & Mary opened an 11-2 lead prior to the first media timeout of the game at the 15:44 mark of the first half led by two of Tremba's four three-pointers in the contest.

The Tribe continued their strong shooting to open a 17-point advantage, 22-5, at the 10:20 mark in the first half, but the Lancers answered by scoring 12 of the next 17 points to draw within 12 points, 29-17, with just over six minutes remaining in the frame.

However, William & Mary made each of its final five shots of the period to take a 48-26 advantage to the locker room. The Tribe was 19-of-31 (.613) overall and 8-of-13 (.615) from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play. Tremba led all scorers with 17 points, while Williams led the charge for the Lancers with six points in the opening 20 minutes.

William & Mary came out in the second half and increased its lead to 58-31 over the first four minutes. The Tribe continued to shoot well, making two of its first four shots of the frame.

Headen came on strong late in the game, as she scored 14 of her 19 points in the second stanza.

Up next, the Lancers will travel to High Point on Tuesday, Dec. 2 to open their conference schedule against the 2014 regular season Big South Champions. The opening tip is set for 7 p.m., inside the Millis Center.

"With a conference game coming up on Tuesday, we don't have much time to adjust, but we will continue to work hard," Reinson said.
