WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – It only took junior guard
Daeisha Brown one game to live up to the hype of being named second-team All-Big South in Longwood's season-opener.
A native of Richmond, Va., Brown scored 19 of her game-high 29 points in the second half, as the Lancers opened the season with a hard-fought loss, 64-60, against ACC foe Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Longwood falls to 0-1 on the season, while Wake Forest opens the year at 1-0.
"This was a missed opportunity," said head coach
Bill Reinson. "We were competitive throughout, but gave up way too many offensive rebounds. We'll give up our share of offensive boards because of our size, but we had some mental lapses and missed box outs that really hurt us."
Brown scored her 29 points on 10-of-25 shooting and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, while also recording three assists.
Kyndal Skersick also finished in double figures with 10 points, while
Jaclyn Reagan tallied eight points.
Khalilah Ali totaled a team-high nine rebounds to go along with four points.
"
Khalilah Ali was outstanding, as well as
Daeisha Brown," Reinson said.
Micaela Ellis showed why she is going to be a valuable member of the rotation. She looked very comfortable for a freshman. Based on this game,
Jaclyn Reagan deserves a longer look, as I thought she did some very good things for us."
Wake Forest was led by Kandace Ball and Amber Campbell with 13 points each, as preseason All-ACC first-team selection Dearica Hamby was sidelined for the game due to injury.
The Lancers took the early advantage, 11-7, at the 14:48 mark of the first half led by junior
Kyndal Skersick with seven points. The Demon Deacons went on a 10-4 run midway through the first half to take a 30-22 advantage, but the Lancers closed the first half by scoring 11 of the final 17 points of the frame sparked by six points from Brown and five points from Reagan.
Wake Forest took a 36-31 lead to the halftime locker room. Brown led all scorers with 10 points, while Reagan notched eight points on 3-of-4 shooting from the floor. The Lancers shot 33-percent from beyond the arc (3-9) in the half and held the Demon Deacons to 20-percent shooting from three (1-5).
Wake Forest opened its largest lead of the game out of the halftime break of 12 points, 43-31, with 17:20 left. However, Brown scored the next four points of the game to draw Longwood within eight points, 43-35.
The Lancers went on a 6-2 run in a span of 2:22 to close the margin to three points, 63-60, with just over two minutes to play. Brown had the best opportunity to tie the game with 1:29 to play, but couldn't convert for her third three of the game. Amber Campbell of Wake Forest sealed the victory with one of two free throws with 18 seconds to play.
Up next, the Lancers will play their second consecutive power five conference program, as the squad travels to Gainesville, Fla., for a contest against University of Florida. The opening tip is set for 4:15 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 17.
