FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women's basketball team will square off against two Big South Conference opponents at Willett Hall this week. The Lancers will host UNC Asheville on Thursday, January 9 at 7 p.m. before welcoming Gardner-Webb University to Farmville on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 2 p.m. tilt. Both games will be streamed live via the Big South Network.
Looking At Longwood
Longwood is currently 5-9 overall this season, including 2-3 in Big South action. The Lancers, who dropped their final two decisions during a five-game homestand against league opponents Coastal Carolina and Campbell, snapped an eight-game skid with a pair of road wins in their two most recent outings. Longwood held off Presbyterian to take a 46-43 victory on Jan. 2. The squad then mounted a late second-half comeback after being down by as many as 17 to defeat Charleston Southern, 78-71, on Jan. 4. Khalilah Ali/Suffolk leads the Lancers on the boards with 6.5 rebounds per game, while Brown follows with 5.6. As a team, Longwood is shooting 36.4% (287-789) from the floor, including 26.8% (84-314) from beyond the arc, and 70.2% (144-205) from the foul line.
Scouting UNC Asheville
The Bulldogs are 5-9 so far in 2013-14 and 2-3 in Big South play after splitting a pair of decisions last week. UNCA ended a five-game skid with a 54-47 victory against Presbyterian on Dec. 30 before falling, 68-49, against Winthrop on Jan. 2. Asheville, under the direction of second-year head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, is led by Brittany Gwyn with 10.0 points per game. Tianna Knuckles adds 9.4 points per game, while Jeannie Buckner paces the team on the boards with 5.3 rebounds per game. As a whole, the Bulldogs are shooting 34.3% (274-800) from the field, including 27.1% (80-295) from three-point territory, and 72.6% (207-285) from the foul line.
Scouting Gardner-Webb
The Runnin' Bulldogs own a 9-5 overall record in 2013-14, including a 4-1 mark in Big South games. G-WU is in the midst of a three-game win streak, including a 71-57 home victory against Radford on Jan. 2 and a 69-56 upset against Winthrop on Jan. 4. The squad will travel to Liberty on Jan. 9 prior to visiting Longwood on Jan. 11. Gardner-Webb, under the direction of Rick Reeves in his 10th year, is led by Catrina Green with the double-double average of 15.9 points per game and 11.6 rebounds per game. Jasmine Dale and Jessica Heilig add to the offensive effort with 11.4 and 9.8 points, respectively. The Runnin' Bulldogs are currently shooting 40.1% (345-861) from the floor, 28.2% (62-220) on three-point opportunities and 63.6% (213-335) from the foul line.
Series History
Thursday's contest will mark the sixth meeting between Longwood and Asheville in the sport of women's basketball, while Saturday's match will be the 10th time that the Lancers have faced off against Gardner-Webb. Longwood leads the all-time series against UNCA, 4-1, including a 67-54 road victory in the squads' most recent meeting on February 23, 2013. Gardner-Webb holds a slight, 5-4 edge in the all-time series against the Lancers, although Longwood took an 87-75 decision at home on Jan. 3, 2013.
