Longwood Falls, 74-41, at Liberty

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Daeisha Brown/Richmond logged team-highs of 13 points and five rebounds, as the Longwood University women's basketball team fell, 74-41, at Big South Conference and in-state rival Liberty University (12-7, 8-2) on Thursday evening in Lynchburg. Sophomore Jaclyn Reagan/Crossville, Tenn. added to the Lancers' offensive effort with nine points, all of which came from beyond the arc. Jaymee Fisher-Davis and Mickayla Sanders paced the Lady Flames in the victory with 16 points apiece. Longwood (6-13, 3-7) will return home to host Big South opponent High Point University in the squad's LancerStrong game on Saturday, January 25 at 2 p.m.

"We played pretty well offensively for the first 20 minutes, but as has been the case, we struggled to score in the second half," said head coach Bill Reinson. "Liberty shot the ball very well. We need to continue to improve our defense. On the bright side, we did get great efforts from Brenna Robbins and Jaclyn Reagan. Being shorthanded, they were asked to defend Liberty's post players and they battled them all night long. We need to get contributions like that from everyone every time out."

Liberty outscored Longwood, 10-5, to open the game, as Brown accounted for all of the Lancers' points in the first six minutes with a layup and three free throws. The Flames extended their margin with an 11-2 spurt, making the score 21-7 with 10 minutes remaining in the half. Brown converted on two more shots from the charity stripe and Reagan drained her first three-point jumper of the night before Ashley Rininger found the basket to give Liberty a 14-point buffer at 26-12. Longwood battled back, however, as Reagan knocked down back-to-back threes to spark a 10-1 run for the visitors and cut the deficit to just five at 27-22 with less than four minutes to play in the period. The Flames were quick to retaliate with consecutive threes and a pair of free throws to regain a double-digit margin. Sophomore Deborah Headen/Herndon hit a jumper and freshman Brenna Robbins/Erie, Pa. took advantage of two chances at the line, but Liberty held a 37-26 lead at the break.

Coming out of halftime, redshirt-senior Heather Tobeck/La Porte, Texas floated in a jumper from beyond the arc, but Liberty followed with an 11-2 run to go ahead, 50-31, with less than 16 minutes to play. Sophomore Raven Williams/Richmond converted on the front end of a pair of free throws and Headen followed with a three, but the Flames answered with eight points in a row. Sophomore Kyndal Skersick/Orlando, Fla. broke up the Liberty streak with a three-pointer of her own to make it a 20-point game at 58-38 with 12:11 still to go. However, Longwood was unable to gain momentum with a six-minute scoring drought, and Liberty outscored its opponent 16-3 in the waning minutes to secure the 74-41 decision.

In addition to Brown and Reagan, Headen recorded six points in the outing. Robbins added four rebounds on the night. As a team, the Lancers shot 25% (12-49) from the floor, including 29% (6-21) from beyond the arc, and 61% (11-18) from the line in the outing.

Liberty tied a season high with 10 three-point field goals, including four from Fisher-Davis. As a whole, Liberty shot 45% (26-58) from the field, 44% (10-23) from three-point territory and 60% (12-20) from the foul line.

Thursday's contest marked the 32nd meeting between Longwood and Liberty in the sport of women's basketball. The Flames now hold a 17-15 advantage in the all-time series.
