FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University has earned the No. 7 seed for the 2013 Big South Baseball Championship presented by Triangle Rent A Car and will play No. 2 seed and five-time defending Big South Champion Coastal Carolina University in the opening game of the double-elimination tournament on Tuesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. at the Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg. The Lancers finished their regular season with a record of 24-26 overall, 12-12 in the Big South, while placing fifth in the North Division. The Chanticleers finished the season with a record of 35-19 overall, 18-6 in the Big South, while winning the South Division. Longwood and Coastal Carolina did not play during the regular season, and have never met previously in the sport. WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM will broadcast all of the Lancers' games during the tournament and is also available via the Internet at wvhl.net.
Campbell University won its first Big South Conference Baseball Regular-Season Championship with a record of 46-9 overall, 19-5 in the Big South, while winning the North Division. The Fighting Camels earned the No. 1 seed and will play No. 8 seed Charleston Southern University on Tuesday (May 21) at 4:30 p.m. The Buccaneers finished their regular season with a record of 22-32 overall, 11-13 in the Big South, while placing third in the South Division.
High Point University finished with a record of 29-27 overall, 15-9 in the Big South, while placing second in the North Division. The Panthers earned the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 seed Gardner-Webb University on Tuesday (May 21), 45 minutes following game one. The Bulldogs finished their regular season with a record of 28-25-1 overall, 12-11 in the Big South, while placing second in the South Division.
Radford University finished with a record of 29-24 overall, 14-10 in the Big South, while placing third in the North Division. The Highlanders earned the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 seed and event host Liberty on Tuesday (May 21), 45 minutes following game three. The Flames finished their regular season with a record of 29-26 overall, 13-11 in the Big South, while placing fourth in the North Division.
Longwood, coached by 35th-year veteran Charles Buddy Bolding (951-542-4), enters the tournament with seven wins in its last 12 games, including a three-game Big South series sweep past Gardner-Webb (2-1, 6-5, 6-2) and a league series win at Presbyterian (3-2, 6-2), along with wins past in-state schools George Mason (4-3) and Richmond (3-2). The 2013 Big South Baseball Championship presented by Triangle Rent A Car features the top eight teams in the Big South regardless of Division and will be played May 21-25. The Championship will air on the
Big South Network, with the winner take all championship game airing exclusively on ESPN3. The Big South's Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship. The Conference Championship schedule follows below.
