Blake Ream/Yorktown each had two hits and two RBI to lead Longwood University to a 7-3 Big South Conference baseball win at High Point University on Saturday night in High Point, North Carolina. Sophomore
Brandon Vick/Newport News gained the pitching win with the first 8.0-plus innings for the visiting Lancers (15-17, 5-6 Big South) in the middle game of the three-game weekend series. Willie Medina had two hits for the host Panthers (15-16, 3-5 Big South), while Sean Townsley took the pitching loss. Longwood and High Point, each with a win this weekend, will play the series finale on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. in North Carolina.
Longwood scored two runs in the third inning for an early two-run advantage as Ream (2-3, 2 RBI) walked to lead-off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Brandon Delk/Newport News (1-3, RBI) and scored on a two-out, RBI double from Konvicka (2-5, 2 RBI), who later crossed the plate after a single by classmate
C.J. Roth/Yorktown (1-5).
The Lancers added three runs in the fourth inning to lead 5-0, getting a two-out, two-run double from Ream to score juniors
Alex Owens/Purcellville (1-4) and
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (2-4), who had singled and doubled, respectively. Ream scored on a run-scoring double from Delk. The visitors made it 6-0 with another run in the sixth when freshman
Kyri Washington/Prospect (0-3) walked to lead-off, moved to second on a wild pitch and on to third via single by Ream, before crossing the plate during a ground ball double play.
High Point avoided the shutout with two runs in the eighth inning after Sean Wilson (0-3) reached base on a fielding error to lead-off, advanced to third base on a single by Dane McDermott (1-3) and scored unearned on a single from Medina (2-4). Medina later scored unearned, as well, on a ground ball out.
Longwood added a final run in the ninth to lead 7-2 after freshman
Travis Burnette/Lynchburg (2-4) walked with one out, stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Konvicka.
High Point also scored a final run in the ninth to provide for the four-run margin following a lead-off walk to Spencer Angelis (1-2), who moved to second on an infield single by Ryan Retz (1-4), before later scoring on a sacrifice fly by Cody Manzella (0-3, RBI).
Vick (3-3) started and pitched the first 8.0-plus innings for Longwood, scattering seven hits and three runs, one earned, with two walks and three strikeouts. Sophomore
Aaron Myers/Newport News tossed the final 1.0 inning for the Lancers, allowing no hits and no runs with no walks and no strikeouts.
Townsley (3-1) started and pitched the first 4.0 innings for High Point, yielding six hits and five runs, all earned, with one walk and five strikeouts.
