Longwood Falls In Opener At High Point 12-0

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Adam Barry had four hits and two RBI, and Devin Bujnovsky had two hits and three RBI, to lead High Point University to a 12-0 Big South Conference baseball win against Longwood University on Friday night in High Point, North Carolina.  Jacob Newberry gained the pitching win with the first 7.0 innings for the host Panthers (15-15, 3-4 Big South) in the opener of the three-game weekend series.  Freshmen Colton Konvicka/Richmond had two hits for the visiting Lancers (14-17, 4-6 Big South), while senior Kyler Morgan/Lancaster, Pennsylvania took the pitching loss.  Longwood and High Point will play again on Saturday, April 6 at 6 p.m. in North Carolina.

High Point jumped ahead early with three runs in the first inning and added five more runs in the third inning to lead 8-0.  The Panthers made it 9-0 with another run in the fourth inning and HPU pushed three additional runs across the plate in the sixth inning for the 12-run margin.  In the first, Josh Spano (1-5, RBI) had an RBI single and Ryan Retz (1-3, 2 RBI) added a two-run single.  The third featured an RBI ground ball from Dane McDermott (1-3, 2 RBI), a run-scoring single by Scott Glover (2-3, 2 RBI) and a three-run double from Bujnovsky (2-5, 3 RBI).

The Panthers' fourth included a sacrifice fly from McDermott, while the sixth included a two-run double by Barry (2-3, 2 RBI) and a run-scoring single from Glover.

Morgan (2-4) started and pitched the first 3.0 innings for Longwood, allowing 11 hits and eight runs, all earned, with no walks and one strikeout.  Freshman Allen Ellis/Mechanicsville tossed the final 5.0 innings for the Lancers, scattering four hits and four runs, all earned, with two walks and four strikeouts.  Konvicka (2-3) had two hits and a stolen base for Longwood.

Newberry (2-2) started and pitched the first 7.0 scoreless innings for High Point, yielding just three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
