DURHAM, N.C. – The Longwood University men's tennis team earned a 5-2 decision at North Carolina Central University on Wednesday afternoon in Durham, North Carolina. The Lancers were led by junior
Edward Becker|Sydney, Australia and sophomore
Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England, who each won a singles match in addition to combining for a doubles win. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, April 7 when the squad travels to Howard University for a 1 p.m. match.
Becker and Elston opened their day by defeating the duo of Daniil Gerasimov and Jose Fabara, 8-3, in the #1 doubles position. Later in singles action, Elston picked up a win against Thomas Persico at #2 (6-0, 6-1) and Becker took down Fabara 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at #3 to help propel the Lancers to victory.
Longwood was also aided by a 6-4, 7-5 singles victory in the #1 position by senior
Giorgi Khmiadashvili/Tbilisi, Georgia. Sophomore
Harry Kelleher/Sydney, Australia followed with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win at #4. Freshman
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen wrapped up the match with a three-set win in the #6 position (3-6, 7-5, 10-7).
Khmiadashvili and Kelleher faced an 8-4 setback in the #2 doubles position, while Johnson and freshman
James Fudge/Kaarst, Germany fell 8-4 at #3. Freshman
Justin Higgs/Nassau, Bahamas lost in three sets in the #5 singles match.
