ROCK HILL, S.C. – The No. 9 Longwood University men's tennis team fell, 4-0, against No. 8 UNC Asheville on Wednesday afternoon in the first round of the 2013 Big South Conference Men's Tennis Championship at the Winthrop Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Asheville advances to take on top-seeded Coastal Carolina University on April 18, while the Lancers' 2013 campaign comes to a close. Longwood finished its first season as a member of the Big South with a 5-15 overall record.
In doubles play, sophomore
Daniel Elston/St. Austell, Cornwall, England and junior
Edward Becker/Sydney, Australia were defeated, 9-7, by Asheville's duo of Adrien Langeard and Matt Waissen in the #1 position. Freshman
James Fudge/Kaarst, Germany and sophomore
Steed Johnson/Ahoskie, N.C. followed with an 8-1 loss against Alex Croker and Brett Landau at #3 to seal the doubles point. The #2 doubles match went unfinished, as senior
Giorgi Khmiadashvili/Tbilisi, Georgia and sophomore
Harry Kelleher/Sydney, Australia were leading, 8-7, when the outcome of the doubles competition was decided.
The Lancers also faced setbacks in the bottom three singles positions. Johnson fell 6-3, 6-4 at #4, before Kelleher lost 6-2, 6-2 and freshman
Bharani Sankar/Glen Allen was retired 6-1, 6-1 at #5 and #6, respectively. Khmiadashvili, Elston and Becker did not finish their respective singles matches, as the outcome was already decided before their sets were completed. In the top two positions, however, Khmiadashvili and Elston had each won their first set and were leading the second before the match was called.
