Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Johnny Bladel and Chad Carroll each had two hits to lead James Madison University of the Colonial Athletic Association to a 6-4 non-conference baseball win at Longwood University on Wednesday evening at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  J.T. Root gained the pitching win in late relief for the visiting Dukes (16-20), who scored two unearned runs in the 10th inning, and Chris Huffman earned his sixth save with the final inning.  Freshman Kyri Washington/Prospect had a two-run home run for the host Lancers (17-21), while classmate Travis Burnette/Lynchburg took the mound loss with the final inning of relief.  Longwood will host Big South Conference opponent Gardner-Webb University for a three-game weekend series, beginning on Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m. at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.

Longwood got on the scoreboard in the first inning to lead 1-0 with a manufactured run as freshman Colton Konvicka/Richmond (1-3, RBI) drew a lead-off walk, stole both second and third base, and scored on an RBI ground ball to shortstop by junior captain Matt Dickason/Chesapeake (1-5, RBI).

James Madison answered in the second inning to tie it at 1-1, getting back-to-back singles from Conner Brown (1-3, RBI) and Cole McInturff (1-4, RBI) that left Brown at third base with no outs.  Ty McFarland (0-4, RBI) promptly followed with a sacrifice fly ball to deep left field to score Brown.

Longwood added two more runs in the fourth inning to lead 3-1 when Washington (1-4, 2 RBI) slammed a two-out, two-run line drive home run to left field that also scored Dickason, who had singled.  Dickason had moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior captain Alex Owens/Purcellville (0-2) and moved to third on a fly ball to deep center field by junior captain Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (0-4).

James Madison added two runs in the sixth inning to tie it again at 3-3, aided by a couple of hit batters, one with the bases loaded, along with a two walks and a sacrifice fly.  Brown plated the first run scored by Casey Goss (1-6), who had reached on an infield hit to shortstop behind the bag at second base, when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Carroll (2-5), who reached on a fielder's choice when attempting a sacrifice bunt, also scored during the at-bat via a sacrifice fly to right field by McInturff, a close play at the plate when he was able to avoid the tag.  The Dukes took their first lead at 4-3 with an unearned run in the eighth inning when Colby Roberts (1-2) singled with one out, moved to second on a walk and scored courtesy of a throwing error on a fielder's choice play.

Longwood, however, responded with a run in the eighth too while forging a 4-4 tie, getting a lead-off walk from Burnette (1-3), who moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman C.J. Roth/Yorktown (0-3), and scored on an RBI single by Konvicka.

JMU, though, would plate two more unearned runs with two-outs in the 10th inning for the road victory.  Matt Tenaglia (1-5) got the rally started with a two-out single and advanced to third base when Chris Hanson (0-1) reached on a throwing error that allowed him to make it to second.  Tenaglia crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Hanson scored on an RBI single from Bladel (2-4, RBI).

Burnette (3-6) was the last of six pitchers with the final 1.0 inning for Longwood, allowing two hits and two runs, unearned, with no walks and no strikeouts.  Freshman Joe Manion/Midlothian pitched 3.1 innings for the Lancers, yielding three hits and one run, unearned, with three walks and no strikeouts.
