FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University has been seeded No. 9 for the 2013 Big South Women's Tennis Championship, which will be hosted by Winthrop University April 17-20 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Host Winthrop is the No. 1 seed for the third consecutive year. Longwood, making its first appearance in the Big South Championship, is scheduled to play No. 8 Gardner-Webb University in a first-round match on Wednesday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
Longwood completed the regular season with an overall record of 6-13, including 1-8 in the Big South. The Lancers dropped a 5-2 decision on the road at Gardner-Webb on April 6. Longwood will compete this week with a roster that includes seniors
Hannah Hill/Portsmouth,
Marta Pinyol/Barcelona, Spain and
Allison Shulman/Richmond, juniors
Bethany Law/Ona, West Virginia,
Sarah Moomau/Winchester and
Nicole Parker/Richmond along with sophomore
Malin Allgurin/Värnamo, Sweden. Second-year head coach
Jakob Gustafsson is at the helm for the Lancers.
Winthrop (15-9, 9-0 Big South) garnered the Big South regular-season championship. The Eagles were followed by No. 2 Charleston Southern (12-6, 8-1), No. 3 Campbell (8-12, 6-3), No. 4 Liberty (10-10, 6-3), No. 5 Coastal Carolina (10-10, 5-4), No. 6 UNC Asheville (12-9, 4-5), No. 7 Radford (6-14, 3-6), No. 8 G-WU (8-12, 3-6), No. 9 Longwood and No. 10 Presbyterian (7-16, 0-9).
The 2013 Big South Women's Tennis Champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament. The conference championship schedule is as follows:
