Longwood Falls At Coastal Carolina 4-3



CONWAY, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a hard-fought 4-3 Big South Conference women's tennis decision at Coastal Carolina University Monday in Conway, South Carolina.  Seniors Marta Pinyol/Barcelona, Spain and Allison Shulman/Richmond, along with sophomore Malin Allgurin/Varnamo, Sweden each earned wins in singles for the Lancers (2-7, 0-3 Big South) against the Chanticleers (5-4, 2-1 Big South).  Longwood will return home to host Big South opponent UNC Asheville next week on March 13 at 11 a.m. in Farmville.

At Coastal Carolina in the match-opening doubles competition, Pinyol and Shulman fell at No. 1, 2-8.  Allgurin and junior Sarah Moomau/Winchester won at No. 2, 8-2.  Senior Hannah Hill/Portsmouth and junior Nicole Parker/Richmond fell at No. 3, 1-8.  In singles, Pinyol won at No. 1, 0-6, 7-6, 6-2.  Allgurin won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-3.  Shulman won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.  Moomau fell at No. 4, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6.  Hill fell at No. 5, 2-6, 2-6.  Parker fell at No. 6, 4-6, 6-2, 4-6.

“We played our hearts out today and were literally just a few points from having a big upset on the road,” said second-year head coach Jakob Gustafsson.  “I'm proud of how we fought today and especially of Marta, who showed why one should never give up in a match. We now look forward to a few days off before continuing our conference play at home.”

1. Pinyol/Shulman lost to Bates/Kowal 8-2
2. Allgurin/Moomau beat Davies/Ortiz 8-2
3. Parker/Hill lost to De Wit/Scott 8-2

Singles
1. Pinyol beat Scott 0-6, 7-6(5), 6-3
2. Allgurin beat Davies 6-1, 6-3
3. Shulman beat Bates 6-2, 6-1
4. Moomau lost to Kowal 4-6, 6-2, 6-4
5. Hill lost to Robinson 6-2, 6-2
6. Parker lost to de Wit 7-5, 2-6, 6-4
