Longwood, with four-straight victories, and Asheville will complete the three-game weekend series at Bolding Stadium on Sunday, March 17 at 1 p.m.
Longwood took a 1-0 lead in the second as sophomore
Brandon Delk/Newport News (2-4, RBI) and senior
Justin Lacy/Glen Allen (1-3) led-off with consecutive singles, and each moved up a base on a fly ball to center from Washington (2-4, 2 RBI), before Delk scored on a RBI single by Ream (3-4, 5 RBI). The Lancers made it a 7-0 advantage with six runs in the third, getting a three-run home run from Ream to left center field that scored both Lacy and Washington, who had walked and doubled, respectively. Washington's double scored junior
Scott Burkett/Williamsburg (1-4) and Delk, who had each singled and doubled, respectively, and Delk's double had plated sophomore
Travis Biddix/Richmond (1-3), who had reached on a bunt single to start things.
Asheville got on the board in the fourth to make it 7-1 when Hunter Bryant (1-4) singled and later crossed the plate on an RBI single from Eli Miller (1-3, 2 RBI).
Longwood scored another run in the sixth to lead 8-1 when Ream hit his second home run of the day to left field for his team-best fourth homer this season.
Asheville managed two runs in the eighth for the final margin as the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs via three-straight walks to Ian Graham (1-4), Bryant and Justin Woods (0-3). Joyner (3-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single into right field off the glove of Biddix at second base to score Graham, and Miller added a sacrifice fly to deep left field that plated Bryant, before the weather delay.
A severe thunderstorm rolled through the Farmville area with heavy rain, wind and lightning that caused a delay of one hour and 40 minutes. Following the stoppage of play, sophomore
Aaron Myers/Newport News, who had entered after the first two walks were issued during the at bat, promptly struck out the first batter and coaxed a ground ball to shortstop to force a runner out at second base to end the late-game threat.
Vick (1-3) started for Longwood and pitched the first 6.2 innings, scattering seven hits and one run, earned, with two walks and four strikeouts. Myers tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings for the Lancers, yielding two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Connolly (1-2) started for Asheville and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs, all earned, with one walk and one strikeout. The Bulldogs used three other pitchers in the contest.
