Longwood Tops UNC Asheville 7-4 In Big South Opener

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Junior Scott Burkett/Williamsburg had two hits, including a three-run home run, and classmate Alex Owens/Purcellville added a hit and two RBI, to lead Longwood University to 7-4 victory past UNC Asheville in its first-ever Big South Conference baseball game on Friday night at Charles Buddy Bolding Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (9-8, 1-0 Big South) scored five runs in the third inning en route to the home triumph, as senior Kyler Morgan/Lancaster, Pennsylvania earned the pitching win with the first seven strong innings on the mound.  Justin Woods had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs (7-12, 0-1 Big South), while Dean Roland took the pitching loss with the first 5.2 innings.  Longwood and Asheville will continue the three-game weekend series at Bolding Stadium on Saturday, March 16 at 4 p.m.
   
Asheville got on the board first with a run in the top of the second to lead 1-0 as Kyle Towles (1-3) reached on a one-out single, stole second base and scored on a two-out RBI single by Woods (2-4, 2 RBI).
   
Longwood answered in the bottom of the third, scoring the five runs on five hits, including a two-run single with one out by Owens (1-4, 2 RBI) and the three-run home run to left field by Burkett (2-3, 3 RBI), his first homer this season.  Owens' hit scored sophomore Kenny Cassidy/Chesapeake (1-2), who had singled, and freshman C.J. Roth/Yorktown (2-3, RBI), who had doubled.  Burkett's blast plated sophomore Brandon Delk/Newport News (0-3), who had walked, along with Owens for a 5-1 advantage.
   
Asheville added two more runs in the fourth to make it 5-3, getting RBI singles from Todd Joyner (1-4, RBI) to score Hunter Bryant (0-3), who had walked, and an infield single to shortstop by Woods to score Billy Creighton (1-4), who had also singled.
   
Longwood scored a run in the fourth, as well, to lead 6-3 after a sacrifice fly by Roth scored freshman Kyri Washington/Prospect (2-4), who had led-off with a single.  The Lancers added another run in the sixth to lead 7-3 when Washington reached on an infield single to shortstop, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cassidy, stole third base and scored when the Asheville catcher had to make a throw down to first base on a strikeout.
   
Asheville scored a final run in the ninth when Phillip Treadway (1-4, RBI) hit a one-out solo home run to left field to provide for the final margin in the series opener.
   
Morgan (2-1) started for Longwood and pitched the first 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and three runs, all earned, with two walks and five strikeouts.  Sophomore Aaron Myers/Newport News tossed the final 2.0 innings for the Lancers, yielding two hits and the one earned run with no walks and three strikeouts.
   
Roland (0-4) started for Asheville and pitched the first 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs, all earned, with two walks and eight strikeouts.  Ethan Steible tossed the final 2.1 scoreless innings for the Bulldogs, yielding two hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
